This is a shock to see that Charles has passed. My condolences to his family.  While we were in different departments at Greensboro College, I always enjoyed being on committees with Charles; he was such a gentleman, always very thoughtful and deliberate in sharing his ideas and always considering what was best for students. I am sure his impact as a professor will be considered by many students as they hear of this. I am sure many will say he was a "class act."

My wife, Lisa and I send our sympathy to Charles family and loved ones.  I was a colleague of Charles at Greensboro College.  I loved sharing fun ideas, or a laugh whenever we saw each other.  
I was a Professor in the Theatre Department and he was a great supporter of our students and colleagues as well as the faculty of the English department and languages.  
He will be missed by all who were blessed to have known him and his wit, laughter and caring soul.

I knew Professor Hebert during his years at Greensboro College. He was a very kind and intelligent man and I'm so grateful to have known him even if for such a brief time. I'm praying for his family and friends.

Charles was the kindest, most caring friend. We shared a walk and coffee almost every Sunday morning  for several years before he moved away from Greensboro. We bought day old muffins, solved all the problems of the world, laughed a lot and grieved the passing of a mutual friend. He was, for me, a true Southern Gentleman. Peace be with you Charles.

My major condolences to Charles' family members. I was one of his colleagues in the English department at Greensboro College. In fact, we were office neighbors -- and also legitimate friends. He was the kindest and most compassionate colleague, so wonderful and easy to talk to, a genuine joy to be around. Just an all-around wonderful human being. I am so, so sorry for your loss.

Professor Herbert was a wonderful professor. He was always kind and passionate about his love of world literature. Praying for his family and close friends.

My deepest sympathies to the family. Charles was a kind and gentle soul, as well as a wonderful colleague at Greensboro College. His students and advisees truly appreciated his humor and dedication.

This photo was taken from a balcony in the Villa Medici just above the Spanish Steps, and you can see the Vatican over Charles' right shoulder.  The villa is home to the French Academy.  We just snuck in like we belonged there, during one of our many trips together to Italy and Greece.  Charles imparted to me a love of Ancient Greek and Roman history which I still pursue today. Short amount of time getting the chance to be one of his caregivers at brookedale beings I was new, yet so many great memories n things I’ll forever cherish!
