“Farewell To A Warrior”
Larry Arlen Marcantel, 81, of DeQuincy, passed away on Wednesday, June 6, 2018 at the VA Home in Jennings. He was born to his late parents, George and Bertha Marcantel on December 16, 1936 in DeQuincy, LA. Larry loved cooking and reading western novels, and studying military history. He was proud of his privilege to serve in the United States Army with over 25 years of decorated military service and retired as First Sergeant. One of his fondest memories was the camaraderie of his brothers and sisters in arms who served with him. Some of his accolades include, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Air Medal (1-6 Award), Senior Aircraft Crewman Badge, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Bronze Star Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster), Good Conduct Medal (6th Award), Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm (Unit), and the NCO Professional Award. The NCO Professional Award was awarded due to his efforts such as, having to operate as acting base commander of New Cumberland Army Depot during the emergency situation involving the Nuclear Meltdown of Three Mile Island in Harrisburg, PA.
He had the honor and privilege to be the acting First Sergeant to retire the 173rd from Hanau, Germany. He loved working on helicopters and airplanes and was a Quality Control Inspector for Northrup Grumman for 10 years. He was very proud of his five children, and three of his sons for following in his career choice, serving in the military. Altogether, he and his sons served in 11 military campaigns and had the support of his wife, Bonnie Marcantel. Larry loved DeQuincy and had a lot of pride of being from there and the heritage that came with it and how they honor and respect each other as citizens.
He is survived his wife, Bonnie Marcantel; five children, Suzann, James, Raymond, Curtis, Pete; along with numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren, whom he loved dearly; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Larry is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Gene, Sonny; two sisters, Vern, and Tinker.
Services will be held at 2:00pm on Sunday, June 10, 2018 at Hixson-Snider Funeral Home of DeQuincy with Rev. Alvin Dale Smith and Bro. Marshall Tucker officiating. Visitation will be at Hixson-Snider Funeral Home on Saturday, June 9, 2018 from 5:00-9:00pm and will resume on Sunday at the funeral home, from 10:00am until the time of the service.
