Sue Andrews went to be with Jesus Thursday, February 19, 2015 at a local care center. She was born January 24, 1927 to Otis and Belle Sigler Houston in north Allen Parish. The family lived in Oakdale, La where she attended school until graduation in 1943. She then attended and graduated from Northwestern State College in 1947 as a Home Economics and Science teacher. While at Northwestern, she was an active member of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority.
Though her college degree was in education, Sue’s love was in art, all cultures and architecture. She decorated her home beautifully and was always interested in the latest in fashion and décor. Early in their lives, her children and grandchildren were exposed to proper manners, ballet, theater and music. She didn’t think one could ever have enough fine Southern culture.
In June 1947, Sue married G.B. Andrews, Jr. who was also a recent college graduate and a veteran of WWII. She taught school in both Elton and Roanoke until 1949 when she and G.B. established the Western Auto Associate Store of DeQuincy. They worked together in the store until their retirement in 1984. After this retirement, the couple established Andrews’ Crew Service for railroad men from Houston to New Orleans for several years. Sue and G.B. enjoyed another retirement for many years until his death in 2011. They were married for 63 years.
Sue has been a member of Dequincy First Baptist Church since 1949. Sue’s family was, without a doubt, her life…especially after her grandchildren arrived. She and G.B. enjoyed many years of family gatherings and vacations. During her life, Sue traveled throughout the U.S. and also made trips to Europe and northern Africa. Though she traveled to many places, Sue always said she would never want to live anywhere else except Louisiana. She loved the rich culture of our state and enjoyed many visits to NOLA throughout her life.
Survivors are Sue’s son, Dale Andrews, daughter and son-in-law, Anita and Jim Slagle, granddaughters and their husbands Leslie and Joshua McGuire and Jamie and Adam Gremillion; great grandchildren, Luke, Eliana and Elijah McGuire and Clark Gremillion. Two more great grandchildren are expected later this year.
Sue is preceded in death by her husband, G.B. Andrews, infant son, David, parents, Otis and Belle Houston, and sister, Ann Hutchings.
Visitation will be at Hixson/Snider Funeral Home in DeQuincy on Sunday, Feb 22nd 4 – 8 PM and resume 9 AM Monday, Feb 23rd until time of service at 11 AM. Burial will be at Blackjack Cemetery in Pitkin, LA.
The family wishes to thank Grand Cove Nursing Center and Brighton Bridge Hospice for their excellent care and compassion. Memorial gifts may be made to Hopewell Methodist Church in Pitkin, LA or DeQuincy First Baptist Church. Words of comfort may be shared with the family at www.hixsonfuneralhomes.com.
