A lifelong resident of DeQuincy, Rosa Mae graduated from DeQuincy High School and then continued her education at McNeese State University where she earned her Masters +30 in Education. Rosa Mae taught for over 50 years in Beauregard and Calcasieu Parish. She was a celebrated counselor, educator and leader. She taught a lot of folks in DeQuincy and the surrounding areas to swim, play tennis and volleyball. Rosa taught Louisiana History, Free Enterprise, and Home Economics among many other subjects. As a faithful member of First Baptist Church, her love and support of her family and community was unmatched.
Rosa Mae is preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Rose Dunham; her son, Darryl Wayne Dowers; her brothers, Johnny, Harold, Raymond, Charlie; along with her sisters, Iris, Mary, Lee, Montella, Maxine, and Thelma.
She leaves behind her son, John Wayne Dowers; her granddaughters, Caroline Rose and Riley Anne; grandson, Elijah Lucas; along with numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and great-great nieces and nephews.
The family would like to extend the highest praise and gratitude to the Fontenot and Rainwater families for their unconditional love and support. Also with respect to the great staff at High Hope Care Center for going above and beyond in their kindness to Rosa Mae in her final years on this Earth.
A Celebration of Rosa Mae's life will be held at First Baptist Church in DeQuincy, Louisiana on Tuesday, March 17, 2026 at 10:00 am, with Bro. Gil Arthur officiating. Visitation will be at First Baptist Church in DeQuincy on Monday, March 16, 2026 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm. Visitation will resume at the church on Tuesday, from 8:00 am until the time of the service. Burial will be at Rigmaiden Cemetery.
