Snoeyink - Sherwin Jay (Pete), age 88 of DeWitt, Michigan passed away Monday, November 18, 2019, at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit with his family at his side. Pete was born on September 23, 1931, in Blendon Township, Michigan to Frederik and Harriet (Avink) Snoeyink. Pete was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Arlene. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Pete attended Hopkins High School and proudly served in the United States Marines. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Following graduation, Pete held numerous engineering positions at Oldsmobile in Lansing before retiring as a Process Engineer in 1986. Pete and Arlene built and moved into their dream home on Lake Geneva in DeWitt in 1987. They spent leisure time square dancing, traveling, and enjoying time with their family. Pete loved all things University of Michigan, but he especially loved Wolverine football and shared his season tickets with family for over 30 years. Pete was very family-oriented and enjoyed cheering at sporting events for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He was active in his church, loved having morning coffee with his friends, and was well-known for making the best chocolate chip cookies and homemade bread.
Pete is survived by his children, Randall (Janet), David (Susan), Dan (Sara) and Diane (Mark); grandchildren, Michael (Gina), Zachary (Samantha), Tyler (Sonja), Alexandra, Erika, Nathan and Nicholas; and great-grandchildren Aiden and Evan.
Pete is preceded in death by sisters Marilyn (Ron) Sweeris and Alma (Keith) Connor; and survived by brothers Bill (Ann), Gene (Lill); and sisters Carol (Curt) Stoel, Elaine (Dave) Muyskens.
Visitation will be held at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes DeWitt Chapel on Dec. 10 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm and 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Funeral services in celebration of his life will be held at Redeemer United Methodist Church, DeWitt on Dec. 11 at 11:00 am. The family would like everyone to join them for a luncheon in the church reception room immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Redeemer United Methodist Church “Food Pantry” in his memory.
