William “Bill” Hicks, 88, passed away peacefully on July 16, 2025, in DeWitt, Michigan. Born on August 20, 1936, in Lansing, Michigan, Bill lived a full and vibrant life marked by deep love for his family, unwavering service to his country, and an infectious spirit that touched everyone he met.
Bill proudly served in the United States Marine Corps for eight years. His time aboard aircraft carriers left him with countless stories—each one a testament to his character and attention to detail. He carried those memories with pride and shared them often, painting vivid pictures of camaraderie and duty that captivated listeners for hours.
In 1958, Bill married MaryLou—the prettiest girl he had ever met—and together they built a life rooted in love and devotion. Their bond was strong and enduring. They raised three children: Mark Hicks, Renee (Tom) McKerr, and Tina Hicks. Bill’s pride in his children was boundless; he beamed whenever he spoke of them.
His relationship with his son Mark was especially close—a bond forged through shared passions and mutual respect. Together they achieved a dream by winning a national motocross championship in California in 1979. They remained best friends throughout Bill’s life, speaking daily until his final hours. Mark’s compassionate care for his father was a reflection of the deep love they shared.
Bill’s grandchildren held a special place in his heart—they could do no wrong in his eyes. His joy around them was unmistakable; they were truly his soft spot.
A man of remarkable warmth and charisma, Bill never met a stranger. Whether traveling across the country or walking through town, he always seemed to find a familiar face—and remembered their name too. It became something of a family joke but also served as a powerful lesson: people matter.
He believed deeply that “we could do anything we set our minds to,” instilling confidence and determination in those around him simply by believing it himself.
Bill was known for many things: his wide smile, love of motorcycles (especially dirt bikes), hard-working nature, can-do attitude, and an unshakable craving for McDonald’s. He was the kind of man who could fix anything—and if he couldn’t fix it right away, you could bet he’d figure out how.
He carried a picture of his mother in his wallet all his life—a quiet tribute to the woman he lost as a boy but never stopped loving. That depth of feeling defined him: strong yet tender-hearted.
To those who knew him—whether as Dad, Grandpa, friend or neighbor—Bill leaves behind big shoes to fill (literally size 13 double D). But more than that, he leaves behind countless memories: funny stories told over coffee or long rides on motorcycles into the sunset.
A visitation for Bill will be held Sunday, July 20, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 205 E Washington, DeWitt, MI 48820.

Interment will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, 2520 W Willow St, Lansing, MI 48917. Military Honors will be conducted under the auspices of the United States Marine Corps.

Rest easy now, Dad—riding your dirt bike into the sunset with that wide smile lighting the way.
