David was born in Crystal Falls, Michigan, and graduated from Alpha High School. He served in the United States Army as a Combat Engineer in Germany. On February 13, 1965, he married Victoria “Vickie” Ann Pfeiffer. They initially settled in Arizona, but soon returned to Michigan moving to rural DeWitt, where they put down roots and raised their family.
David completed an associate’s degree in civil technology at Lansing Community College and spent 31 years working as a surveyor for the Michigan Department of Transportation, helping lay out roads and bridges throughout the state. A man of remarkable intelligence, he approached life with a thoughtful, curious mind. He was a quiet observer who listened before speaking and loved learning new things. His humor was just as understated as his manner, and those who knew him well appreciated his unconventional approach to making others laugh.
His greatest pride was his family. David was a devoted husband to Vickie, a loving father and proud grandfather. He was also a man of strong faith and was an active longtime member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in St. Johns.
David loved the outdoors and found great happiness in camping, gardening, and hunting pheasants and deer. He was a beloved 4-H softball coach for many youth, and he volunteered as a camp host at Yankee Springs for years, where he became a favorite among campers. His grandchildren treasure memories of fishing derbies, nighttime hikes, stargazing, and bike rides to the candy store. He had a gift for making ordinary days memorable.
Family traditions and holiday gatherings held a special place in David’s heart. He especially enjoyed the annual cousin Easter egg hunt, and took particular delight in finding clever, nearly impossible hiding places for Easter eggs, always enjoying the challenge of outsmarting his grandchildren. He was equally notorious for quietly winning just about every card game he played with his family.
David enjoyed football at every level, particularly high school football, and as a proud lifelong Yooper, his hometown team, Crystal Falls Forest Park, was always on his radar. He was a loyal Michigan State sports fan and followed the Detroit Tigers. In his retirement years David enjoyed traveling the world with Vickie, discovering new cities and cultures. He appreciated trying new foods, liked a strong cup of coffee and never turned down black licorice. He also had a special way with dogs and was rarely without a treat in his pocket for a four-legged friend.
David is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Vickie; his children, Pete (Cindy) Pfeiffer and Holly (Hank) Mowery; and his five grandchildren, Myles, Cameron, Fr. Jack, Trey, and Elyse. He was preceded in death by his parents Raymond & Tunie Pfeiffer and brother Fred Pfeiffer.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in David’s memory be made to St. Ann’s Home or Emmanuel Hospice, both in Grand Rapids, MI.
A visitation will be held at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home, 205 E Washington St. DeWitt, Michigan on November 2, 2026 beginning at 12:00/noon followed by a memorial service at 2:00. Burial with military honors will take place at 10:30 a.m. on November 3, 2026, at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Michigan.
