

Janet Matheny, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 17, 2025, surrounded by love. She was born on March 21, 1939, in Lansing, Michigan, where she lived, worked, and built a beautiful life rooted in kindness, laughter, and community.
The daughter of Christine and Zealin Cullimore, Janet grew up in a loving family with one sister and five brothers. She is preceded in death by her cherished brothers Edward, Leon, Dean, Jim, and Tom, and is survived by her dear sister, Virginia Strine, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday.
Janet shared 55 wonderful years of marriage with her husband, Frederick Matheny, and together they raised three sons: Jeffrey (Kimberlee), Thomas (Randy), and Daniel. Her family was the joy of her life. She also leaves behind two grandchildren, Kyle (Kendra) Matheny and Justyne (Ivan) Ross, and four great-grandchildren, Aiden and Adalyn Matheny, and Eliza and Carey Ross, all of whom brought her endless joy.
Janet was known for her gentle spirit, her generosity, and the warmth she extended to everyone she met. A woman of grace, warmth, and compassion, Janet was deeply loved by all who knew her. She gave freely of her time and heart to her community and her church, where she found both strength and purpose. She brought light and kindness wherever she went.
One of Janet’s greatest passions was singing. For 50 years, she performed with the Sweet Adelines, a spirited A Cappella chorus who shared her love of music. Through competitions and performances, she found endless joy, connection, and lifelong friendships. Janet will be remembered for her unwavering kindness, her laughter, and the love she gave so freely.
A visitation will be held at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 205 E Washington St., DeWitt, MI, on Tuesday, October 21, from 2–4 and 6–8 pm with the Rosary prayed at 7:30 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am Wednesday, October 22nd at Saint Therese of Lisieux Parish, 102 S. Randolph St., Lansing, officiated by Father John Fain.
