Kelly Michelle Maltby, age 45, passed away on July 28, 2026 after her courageous six-year battle with cancer. Kelly was born on October 23, 1980, in Warren, Michigan, to Andrea and Jim Roberts. She grew up in Shelby Township, Michigan, and later made her home in DeWitt, Michigan, after marrying her loving husband Jim in Lansing, Michigan on September 1, 2001.
Kelly attended Stevenson High School in Sterling Heights, Michigan, graduating in 1998. Even then, her remarkable intellect and steady confidence were evident—she was selected by a panel of educators to deliver the commencement speech at her high school graduation at the Palace of Auburn Hills before a full-capacity crowd. She went on to attend Michigan State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications in just three years, a reflection of both her drive and her sharp mind.
Kelly devoted her professional life to public service and the well-being of children. She began her career with the State of Michigan as a Child Protective Services caseworker and concluded it as a Manager in the Division of Child Welfare Licensing Disciplinary Action and Background Check Units. She loved her work and took deep pride in it, bringing a calm strength, clear judgment, and unwavering resolve to responsibilities that mattered greatly. In every role, she was a fierce protector of children, guided by compassion and a steadfast sense of what was right.
Kelly’s presence was unforgettable. She was the kind of person who lit up any room she walked in to. She was kind, funny, extremely intelligent, proudly unique, and made friends so easily. She was always willing to help anyone who needed it. She cared so deeply for those she loved, and she never let them forget it. She was quiet yet strong and unbelievably courageous.
She found joy in playing sports, vacationing, and spending time with friends and family. She especially loved watching her daughter play softball, cheering with pride and wholehearted support. She enjoyed golfing with her husband, following MSU sports, and taking her beloved dog Bella for walks—simple moments that reflected the life she cherished and the love she gave so freely.
Kelly is survived by her husband, Jim Maltby; her daughter, Paige Maltby; her mother, Andrea Syms; her brother, Scott Roberts, and sister in-law, Kelly Roberts; her mother in-law, Carolyn Masseau; her father in-law, Larry Masseau; her sister-in-law, Candace Rosebrugh; and her nieces and nephews, Kylie Rosebrugh, Samantha Roberts, and Chase Rosebrugh.
She was preceded in death by her father, Jim Roberts; her stepfather, Nick Syms; her father-in-law, Bruce Maltby; and her grandmother, Margaret Conte.
