Larry J. Elliott passed away on February 27, 2010 at the age of 72. He was born in Lansing on March 15, 1937 to the Reverend Marcel and Grace Elliott. A graduate of Western Michigan and Michigan State universities, Larry led a life characterized by service – as a teacher, fire fighter, sailor and soldier – touching the lives of thousands.
For over 30 years Larry was a teacher at Otto Middle School in Lansing. From 1973 through the present, he was also a fire science instructor for Lansing Community College and the State of Michigan Fire Fighters Training Council. In addition, Larry was a member of the Battle Creek, Lansing Township, City of DeWitt and Blue Lake Township fire departments. An Army veteran, Larry served as a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary for over 10 years, achieving the designation of Master Helmsman aboard the US Coast Guard Cutter Mackinaw, a Great Lakes ice breaker.
Outside fire training and the Coast Guard, Larry's greatest joys were his family, travel, boating and spending time at his cottage on Blue Lake in Kalkaska, Michigan. A football season ticket holder for over 20 years, he was also an avid fan of Michigan State athletics. Larry was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Terry, and is survived by Shirley, his wife of 46 years, his brothers, Grant and Mark, his sons, Matt and Joe, daughter-in-law Anne, grandchildren Jack and Meg, grand-dog Brogan, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, March 5, 2010, at 2:00 p.m., with visitation 1 hour prior, at the Central United Methodist Church, 215 N. Capitol, Lansing, MI, 48933.
