Lawrence J. “Larry” Swick, a.k.a. “The Chicken Herder”, 76, traded in his worn-out earthly body for a heavenly model on Sunday, January 31, 2016. He had battled and defeated practically every ailment known to man, including 2 bouts with lung cancer, but the resulting recurring pneumonia finally bested him. In the immediate days before he went to be with God, he was surrounded by the laughter and love of his family.
Larry was born on September 18, 1939, to the late John E. Swick and Gertrude E. (Mason) Swick, and grew up in Howell, MI. He received his Bachelor’s Degree from Michigan State University and was retired from the Michigan Department of Transportation after more than 30 years of service.
Larry is survived by his unflappable wife of 54 years, Shirley (Michelfelder) (a.k.a. “Slowly but Shirley”), his daughters Kathy “The Shark” Colby and Laurie “Poohus” Towler, whom he proudly doted on, despite nearly going broke trying to keep them in competitive ice skating and horseback riding during their younger years. He is also survived by his younger brother Terry Swick, niece Christina Swick, granddaughter Morgan Colby, and sons-in-law Mark Colby and Travus Towler.
Although his wife and daughters were the love and pride of Larry’s life, he also generously supported many other friends and acquaintances with money and encouragement. Larry never let a job well done go unrewarded, no matter what the person’s status in life. No doubt he’s with God enjoying his hobbies of golf, radio controlled airplanes, mowing the lawn, playing the piano, and planning mischievous pranks reminiscent of his college years as “The Mad Chucker” who rolled bowling balls down the dorm hall in the middle of the night.
For those of you who knew Larry and his love of talking on the phone, keep an eye out for dimes put in your path, as this is the agreed-upon way for him to let those he left behind know he is calling to say hello.
Please come at your leisure to an informal luncheon in Larry’s honor on Thursday, February 18, 2016, between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. so his family may recognize the friends, acquaintances, and dedicated medical personnel who touched his life. Champps Restaurant, Eastwood Town Center, 2800 Preyde Blvd, Lansing, MI 48912
Memorial contributions may be made to Capital Area Humane Society, 7095 W. Grand River Ave., Lansing, MI 48906; Habitat for Humanity Capital Region, 1941 Benjamin Dr., Lansing, MI 48906; or a charity of your choice.
