Born on June 8, 1941, in Ionia, Michigan, Larry was the son of Alvin Julius and Gabriella (Ella) Catherine (Cook) Thelen. He grew up in Fowler, Michigan, and graduated from Fowler High School in 1959, where he proudly lettered in football. His athletic talent earned him a scholarship to the University of Wyoming to play for the Wyoming Cowboys—an opportunity that not only shaped his college years but also led him to meet the love of his life, Sue Ellen Knudsen. The two were married on February 14, 1961, in Laramie, Wyoming.
Larry began his professional life as a utility surveyor with Banner and Associates, working across the rugged landscapes of Wyoming and Colorado. In 1967, he moved with his young family to Williamston, Michigan. There, he embarked on a long and fulfilling career with Consumers Energy as a Right-of-Way engineer until his retirement in 2004. His work ethic and dedication left a lasting mark on the communities he served.
A man of deep faith and civic commitment, Larry was a longtime member of Saint Mary’s Parish in Williamston before joining St. Jude Parish in DeWitt after relocating to St. Johns. He took pride in contributing to the development of Williamston’s Industrial Park through his involvement with the Williamston Economic Development Corporation.
Larry had a zest for life that was reflected in his many interests. He was an enthusiastic golfer who enjoyed participating in his league for many years. He took great pride in maintaining his beautiful lawn along the river on High Street in Williamston—a place that became a cherished family home. Family camping trips to Ludington and Manistee were among his favorite memories during his children’s younger years. Each fall brought another beloved tradition: “hunting” trips with close friends Bob, Steve, and Doug into the northern Michigan woods. After retirement, Larry enjoyed traveling to Alaska and exploring the western United States.
Known affectionately as a “gentle giant,” Larry was humble and kind-hearted. He had an extraordinary memory for names and delighted in conversation with everyone he met. His warmth extended beyond his immediate family—he was the fun dad in the neighborhood during his children’s upbringing and later became a beloved grandfather figure to neighborhood children in Saint Johns. His presence brought joy to many lives.
Larry is survived by his children: Steven (Laurie) Thelen of Royal Oak; and Teresa (Tom) Elliott of St. Johns; grandchildren: Nathan Elliott of Traverse City; Amanda Jones of Kalamazoo; and Chelsea Thelen of Royal Oak. He is also survived by siblings: Daniel (Carol) Thelen of DeWitt; Roger (Diane) Thelen of Fowler; Wayne (Elaine) Thelen of Williamston; Diane Hall of Williamston; and Sue (Dan) Bauer of Williamston; as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He held close bonds with special step-son Kim Kiwala and his wife Kimberly; dear family friend Amanda Paulson; and lifelong friends Bob and Elizabeth Knowles, Steve Kranz, and Doug Crisp.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife Sue Ellen (Knudsen) Thelen on August 5, 1979; brother Ronald (Coralee) Thelen; brother-in-law David (Diane) Hall; and nephew Jason (Dawn) Bauer.
