Leona Bell Them, age 99, of Lansing, Michigan passed away on Thursday, March 11, 2021. Leona was born May 23, 1921 in Charlotte, MI to Clinton and Ethel (Bobier) Simmons.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Peter Them; daughter Sonja Simon (Jorgensen) and son-in-law Gene Barish.

At the age of 16 Leona contracted TB and was hospitalized for a year. When she finally was released from the hospital she began working at George Worthington Warehouse. Leona would pick stock off of shelves that needed to be delivered. When Leona retired from George Worthington she went back to highschool to get her diploma. Leona graduated with the Holt class of 1987. Her family threw her a big graduation party full of flower, balloons and food.

Leona loved to stay at home with her children. At her house she had many different kinds of fruit trees. When the kids would come home from school they were a loud to have a snack. Leona would have snacks ready for them or if the weather was nice she would let them go into the yard an pick their favorite fruit. With so many fruit trees in the yard Leona and her neighbor would do a lot of fruit canning.

Holiday's were so much fun in the Them household, especially Christmas. The rule for Christmas was you needed to attend church first before opening gifts. Leona would remind her family of what Christmas was all about. Church first to celebrate the Lord's birth, then a celebration.

Leona loved going to church with her daughter Sonja. They would attend either St. Matthews Or Our Savior Lutheran church.

When the girls got older they would take their mom on many vacations. Mostly to Florida and up north in Michigan.

Left to cherish her memory is her daughters; Lacinda (Donald) Reed, and Nancy Barish. Six grandchildren and several great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and beloved friend Doug, or "Dougie" as Leona would call him.

The family of Leona Them would like to give a special thank you to Hazel Finley. You were all so wonderful in taking care of the Them family.

Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at for the Them family.
