On Thursday, January 30, 2020, Maria Antoinette Iacobellis passed away peacefully at the age of 86 after fighting an extended illness. Preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Michael Iacobellis, Maria, was the mother of three children, Rocco (Laurie) who reside in Philadelphia, Michael (Tamara) who also reside in Philadelphia and Dominic (Nancy) who live in Dewitt, Michigan. Maria has enjoyed the love of six grandchildren – Michael (Tiffany), Leanna (Ryan), Jason (Katie), Alicia (Anthony), Nicholas (Karly) and Gabrielle and three great children (Penelope, Jason Jr. and Jackson) who were the absolute and precious loves of her life.

Born in Carbonara near Bari, Italy, Maria came to America at the age of 14. She was later married to Dr. Michael Iacobellis. They were married for 58 years. Maria was an exceptional wife, mother and grandmother (Nonna). Better known as “Naunee” to her family and others, Maria was the matriarch and center of our universe. Her caring, compassionate demeanor, love of life and profound focus on family and friends was felt by many. Her sense of humor, ability to bring laughter and joy to those around her made her larger than life to those who knew her. She was the Queen to her kids and grandkids, and she would cynically but skillfully act the part.

As much as she cared about family, she was keenly aware and interested in others. She did this not out of obligation, but because of who she was. She was always the first to offer help. Tough and stubborn in her conviction to bring happiness to others, her personality was to challenge, engage and always stir the pot with a playful and conniving twinkle. It was her magic and persona.

Maria was the consummate sports fan and without pause, knew more than most about every failing Detroit team. And she had opinions, lots of them! The more she had the more she was loved. So, for those who knew her and her immediate family, we will never forget our dear, sweet breath of inspiration and know that she is in God’s hands living in eternal happiness.

Maria has asked that in lieu of flowers that any donations be sent to her favorite charity – St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

To the entire Iacobellis Family: Our thoughts & prayers are for Naunee, you and the family at this difficult time.
Naunee had a special gift which she shared with all.Everytime we spoke with her she was so upbeat, positive and funny. She never wanted to talk about herself but wanted to know how WE were doing, what was going on with us.
We loved to call her because when we finished our conversation,we always said ... what a special lady and she left us with a glow which always made us feel upbeat and special.
In giving,Naunee received!Honey Baked Ham takes on a new meaning for us. Thanksgiving takes on a new meaning for us.
We will never forget and we will never forget Naunee. We give thanks for Naunee coming into our life .What a gift!
Rest In Peace Naunee & God Bless you and your family.
Love, Ann & Jim Gensler

Maria, you are the best mother-in-law a young bride could ever have. We, Tammy’s parents, recognize and appreciate your love, kindness and generosity to our oldest daughter. From the time she was warmly welcomed into the loving family you groomed and for the many, many ensuing years, you were always there for her.

Only God knows the number of people you touched with your example of unconditional love and devotion. Fred and I thank God for allowing your life to intersect with Tammy’s and ours.

We rejoice in the knowledge through our faith that you and your baby girl you so often, lovingly, spoke to me about are together again.

Maria was my Confirmation Sponsor and I alway referred to her as my Godmother. We share the same name, Maria Antonietta. She was always very kind and generous with me. I haven't seen her is several years, but she was often on my mind. She would always be the one in the group to make you laugh. Lately I have been thinking a lot about childhood memories of all of the paisano families coming together for holidays when one of the families would host a party at their home, picnics at Camp Dearborn, soccer games at Ford field or poker games on Saturday nights. We would be so excited about seeing everyone and couldn't wait to get there and didn't want to leave when the day was over. I miss those days, I miss all those people who have gone before, including my parents, and now Maria has joined them. I hope they are all together happy, healthy and enjoying their time together once again.

Our Aunt (Zia) has been a second mother to both of us. She has always been there to offer her words of wisdom in such a loving and caring way. Her generosity and sense of humor was undeniable! She was a special lady who touched many lives and left a handprint on many hearts- including ours!

We forever remember how welcoming and gracious Zia was whenever we visited. She always made sure she had delicious food (specially sweets- which she loved) on the table and insisted that you eat even if you weren't hungry. She made you laugh even if you were sad, made you feel strong when you were weak and always was more concerned about everyone else instead of herself. Her stories were priceless and will continue to remain unforgotten as we were truly blessed to have her in our life's.

Zia we will miss you terribly but we know you will always be in our heart and for now, heaven has another angel to watch over us!!

Rest in Peace- We Love YOU!!

We will never forget how Kind, loving and generous Nonnie was to our family !
We all loved her humor and her great stories! And we all enjoyed the lovely Papyrus greeting cards she hand picked.
And then filled the card with her beautiful handwriting and heartfelt wishes.
She never missed an opportunity to send one of those special cards!
We all will miss her but we will never forget how she touched our lives!!
We love you!

Whenever the grandkids were around, it was heaven. And of course Mom was right in the middle. Is that a satisfied and proud face?
