Born to parents, Joseph and Julia Freund in Westphalia, Michigan, Mary died at age 97 on June 19, 2013. She married Michael Byelich in 1937 and he predeceased her in 1989. Mary was also predeceased by her son, Donald (Susan) and grandsons Michael and Bradley, as well as siblings, Clarence, Erwin, Joseph, John, Catherine Snitgen and Clifford. She is survived by sons, Richard (Penny) and Ronald; grandchildren, Elizabeth (William) Newberry, Brian (Jessie) Byelich, Benjamin (Emily) Byelich; great-grandchildren, Olivia Newberry, Evan Byelich, Eleanor Byelich and Harrison Byelich; and much-loved sister, Evelyn Weiland. Many dear nieces and nephews survive her as well. Mary spent the major part of her life as a homemaker, but worked some years in the food industry as a baker at St. Vincent’s Home for Children and as a cook for the Martha Dixon Copper Kettle Program on WJIM, employing her wonderful culinary skills. She and her husband Mike spent many winters in Florida until his death and she was able to continue the tradition until 2011. Her funeral mass will be celebrated at11:00 a.m. on Monday, June 24, at the Catholic Community of St. Jude, 801 N. Bridge Street, DeWitt, Michigan, with Rev. Larry Delaney presiding. Family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 23, at the Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes DeWitt Chapel, 205 E. Washington.
