

Roy was born on August 7, 1946 in Detroit, Michigan to Joseph Francis Sly and Katherine Jane Sly (Bayley). As a child, Roy attended Sacred Heart Catholic School until the 8th grade, Grosse IIe High School and then went on to graduate from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelor's degree.
Roy then would serve his country in the US Navy and in the US Army National Guard, where he would retire from after 24 years of faithful service to his country.
He married Diane Dorothy (Treaster) on June 29, 1974 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. They would move to Lansing, Michigan and became a member of St Therese Catholic Church. Eventually would move to DeWitt, Michigan and become a member of St Jude Catholic Church in DeWitt, Michigan.
Roy was a man of character, honest, caring and a loving husband, father and grandfather. Some of his hobbies and interest were, playing golf, watching Detroit and University of Michigan sports, boating on the Detroit River while growing up and more recently Houghton Lake with his family and friends. He was an avid reader, especially of war history. However, his greatest joy was attending his sons and grandchildrens sporting events and musical/art events.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Dorothy Sly; sons, Matthew Charles Sly (Rachel) of Staunton, VA, and Michael Kenneth Sly (Kaysi) of Mt Pleasant, MI; grandchildren, Maxim Sly (fiance Dalanie Mott), Emily Sly, Izzy Sly, Abby Sly, Josh Watters and Lindsay Watters; a brother, Joseph Sly; niece, Jennifer Missell and her children, Harrison, Bobby and Aspen; as well as his many friends throughout his life.
Roy is preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Katherine Sly; and nephew, David Sly; father and mother in-law, Kenneth Treaster and Frieda (Scherdt) Treaster; brother in-law, Kenneth Treaster II.
A funeral mass will be held, Tuesday, April 21, 2026 at 11 am at St Jude Catholic Church 801 Bridge St, DeWitt, MI 48820. With a visitation being held at church on Tuesday, from 10 to 11 am prior to the service. Burial with military honors will follow after the service at DeWitt City Cemetery (across from the church) with a luncheon to follow at church.
