Kathryn Swaagman Minnema was born in Wisconsin on November 22, 1924, the daughter of Harry and Etta (Slager) Swaagman. She was the fourth of nine children, five girls and four boys. She was married to George Minnema on June 5, 1942. In December of 1951, Kay and George and their two children moved to Artesia, California. She cleaned houses, took in ironings, and worked as a nurse at Artesia Christian Home. Her sense of style was demonstrated in her employment at John and Gordon’s dress shop. Soon her love for children and clothing led her to open her successful business of Kay’s Tiny Togs in Artesia in 1972. Her love for the Lord, caring heart, and servant attitude led her to serve for many years as Sunday School teacher, on the women’s guild, to volunteer at Artesia Christian Home and Affordable Treasures. She enjoyed Sunday School classes, Bible studies and was known as “Grandma Kay” and a friend to many.
Kay will be sadly missed by her four children; Eloise and John Westra, Jeff Minnema, Gene and Rhonda Minnema, and Ken and Sue Minnema. She loved and was proud of her 11 grandchildren: Bryan, JJ, Keith, Christy, Melinda, Amanda, Amber, JR, Aaron, Ashley, Austin and 16 great-grandchildren: Brianna, Kaitlyn, Jake, Sabrina, Keira, Kyler, Rachael, Madison, Mallory, Hannah, Kevin, Christian, Jimmy, Dean, Alex, and Raelynn. She is survived by her siblings Henry, Helen, Edna and Alfred; her nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Kay was a member and dear friend of Bethel Reformed Church. Kay’s love for children is expressed in her choice of a memorial fund for Bethany Christian Services. Anyone wishing to give may donate in her name.
