Pascal Augimeri, known to his family and friends as Pat, was born into this world on June 8, 1912 in Olean, New York. He passed away on May 29, 2012, just 11 days before his 100th birthday. We mourn his passing, our hearts ache with this loss, but we recognize the fullness of his long life and are grateful for the many years Pat had on this earth. He was a loving father and husband, a beloved uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather, and a close friend to scores of people from all walks of life.
Pat was born to Italian immigrants Tony and Mary Augimeri, the fourth of six children. His childhood was spent in Olean in western New York state, a small city with a large and vibrant Italian immigrant population. In 1929, at age 16, he moved with his family to Los Angeles, where his father opened a grocery store. This would be the family business for decades. Pat and his brother Nick owned and operated several small grocery stores throughout Los Angeles.
Pat served his country in the army during World War II. He returned after three years in Australia, New Guinea, the Philippines, and Japan. He met his future wife, Vickie Giambrone, on New Years Day, 1950. They were married six months later, on June 4, 1950. In 1953 Pat and Vickie moved into their new house in Downey, which would be Pat’s home for the next 59 years, and where they would raise their five children: Marie, Patty, Tony, Ruth, and Suzanne.
Pat witnessed a lot of history during his time on earth, all the great changes of the twentieth century, and the arrival of the new century with its promise and peril. Pat appreciated the past, looked forward always to a bright future, but lived completely in the present. He loved family gatherings, card games with his friends, time spent with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He had an inquisitive spirit and as a result was a great conversationalist and listener.
Pat is survived by his wife Vickie, by children Marie Augimeri, Patty Slay, Ruth Augimeri, Tony Augimeri, and Suzanne Augimeri; sons-in-law Dudley Slay, Joe Escareno, Jim Howley and Sven Augimeri; grandchildren Jimmy Koffel, John Koffel, Patrick Koffel, and Micah Augimeri-Lee; and great-grandchildren Jordan and Jonah Koffel; and many devoted nieces and cousins.
A memorial Mass in Pat's honor will be held on Saturday, June 16, at 10:00am, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help church in Downey. A gathering will follow at the home of Suzanne and Sven Augimeri in Downey.
