Sad to read this. Bruce was the first HIC I worked for (summer 1971, Quebec) and a great person I came to know. Couldn't have met a better person to introduce me to the CHS. As Janzen pinted out, he was a real work hard play hard kind of guy, always good humored, can't remember him ever getting angry; a great loss, for everyone who knew him, I'm sure.

Bruce was a great man.  I worked with him and he was also my boss at one point. Shared those duties with Dusty DeGrasse.  My condolences.

Bruce was a great boss with a direct and kind disposition. He will be sorely missed by many of his friends and colleagues from the Canadian Hydrographic Service. My condolences goes out to Jean and her family for their loss. He was truly a gentle man.

Bruce will be truly missed. I had the privilege of working with Bruce on a number of surveys, his professional and relaxed attitude made the field work enjoyable for everyone. I will miss his humor and the stories he used to tell. I always think that Bruce's motto was "work hard and play hard" and this is how I will remember him.

I was privileged to work for and with Bruce for many years, all of them a pleasure.  He didn't need a book or a course on supervision or management; he instinctively treated everyone fairly and with respect.  We've lost one of the best.

Bruce was a wonderful uncle with great stories of the Arctic and Caribbean.  He and Jean were amazingly hospitable to our family when we passed their way.  I am glad his passing was peacefully, and pray God's comfort to Jean and all his family and friends.  Scott Paul-Bonham (Terre Haute, Indiana)

Jean, just to let you know i am thinking of you. Both you and Bruce have been there so many times to help out Diana, and myself, from felling a tree on Ofield to giving us fire wood during the ice storm, when we ran out.
Bruce was the type of person i always felt comfortable around. His passing is the world's loss..

Bruce was my first supervisor (HIC) with the Canadian Hydrographic Service and one of the biggest influences to make CHS my career choice. 
He was my original work/life/play balance guru, with his attention to detail during the workday and his ability to draw everyone together socially after hours. He treated his crew with a level of dignity and respect that inspired everyone to go the extra mile to get the job done.
A well spring of freely-shared experience and advice, a great story teller, a man of integrity, and a source of inspiration always.
Always remembered and never surpassed in my version of CHS lore.

Very sad news indeed. Bruce was a superb HIC to me from my first days at CHS, back in 1992 and on the Franklin in 1993. He will be missed. Rest in Peace, Bruce.
