Affectionately known as “Ol’ Boy” to his sons and grandsons, Ed was a much-loved Grandfather to Kristen, Kevin (Fang), Andrew (Sarah), Jason (Kelsey), Michael (Ali), Ian, Peter and Christopher. Adored Great Grandpa “GG” of Owen & Wesley; Callie & Maeve. Predeceased by his loving first wife Bernice (nee Hall), his beloved daughter Rebecca, and by his 7 older siblings. Remembered also by many Matthews’ nieces and nephews, the Hall family, the Campbell family and dearest friend of 90 years, Arch Harvey (Lois).
Honoured to be a graduate of McMaster University and a lifetime member of the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario, Ed had a long and distinguished career, working for McMaster University, the Hamilton Board of Education and finally as the Treasurer for the City of Hamilton.
Ed was a long-standing and well-respected resident of Hamilton and in later years Dundas. During his working years and following his retirement, he involved himself in his community and served on various boards. He enjoyed many travel adventures with his wife, Darlene and loved to golf and curl, having been an esteemed Member at the Dundas Golf and Curling Club for over 30 years.
A heartfelt thank you to the hospital health professionals and networks in both Hamilton and Burlington who offered support and care to Ed. The family also deeply appreciates the living experience & kindness provided by Martha’s Landing Retirement Residence, especially during the peaks of COVID.
Cremation has taken place and a celebration of life will be planned later. If so desired, donations in Ed’s memory may be made to the Royal Botanical Gardens.
