Goldwin Sylvester French passed away peacefully in Hamilton General Hospital on August 18th at the age of 90 after a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. ‘Goldie’ the much loved Father of Charles, his partner Kasia, and loved grandfather of Theo and Hugh, of Cambridge, England, was predeceased by his wife Iris in 2005 and his daughter Alison (2006). He is survived by his brother Glen, nieces Virginia and Bonnie-Jean and their families in London and Mount Forest, Ontario.
Professor French had a distinguished academic and administrative career as Professor of History at McMaster University between 1948 and 1972, and then as President and Vice-Chancellor of Victoria College, University of Toronto, until his retirement in 1987. He was the recipient of numerous awards and honorary degrees, and chaired the Ontario Historical Studies Series.
The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 27th at 11AM at the MARLATT FUNERAL HOME “SWACKHAMER CHAPEL”, 195 King Street West, Dundas. Interment to follow at Grove Cemetery, Dundas. In lieu of flowers please make donations to the Alzheimer’s Society. The family would like to give special thanks to all the care-givers at The Georgian in Dundas, and especially to his dear friend Jeanne Beck, for their wonderful help and attention over the last few years.
