It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of James Murray (Jim), on Monday, November 27th, in his 78th year. Jim is predeceased by his loving wife of 47 years Joan Diane (nee Stanton), his parents James Sr. and Mary Murray, and his sister Barbara Balonjan. Survived by his daughters Patricia (Mark), and Debbie (Jack) and his five grandsons, Matthew, Evan, Logan, Gavin and Aiden, as well as many nieces and nephews. Jim will be dearly missed by his closest friend of over 64 years, Doug Tulloch (Wenda).
Jim was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 58, and Pipe Major of their Pipes and Drum band for many years. Band practice was every Monday night, and Jim rarely missed a night. He LOVED to play the pipes and organized and played in countless events and parades over the years. Jim adored everything about music. If you said a phrase that reminded him of a tune, he would burst out into song. Every table top, counter or hard surface was a welcome place to practice drumming upon. His Elvis singing voice was a spot on match and his Ringo impersonation was barely distinguishable from any real Beatles song ever heard.
Jim was a loyal employee of the Hamilton Hydro for over 30 years, working as a meter reader. He walked countless kilometers in all types of weather, met many people on his travels, and made a lot of true friends there. He retired in 2001, but continued going “walk-about” every day. After retirement Joan was able to convince Jim to try travelling and he quickly caught the travel bug. They went many places together and especially enjoyed cruising and Las Vegas. If there was a casino nearby, Jim never paid for those trips because he always broke even!
Special thanks to Dr. Jesse Solomon, Lisa and countless other nursing staff at St. Peter’s Hospital in Hamilton. Your kindness, compassion and dedicated care towards Jim during his stay is very much appreciated.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Peter’s Hospital or the Canadian Cancer Society.
A funeral Service will be held at Marlatt Funeral Home (905-528-6303), 615 Main Street East, Hamilton, on Tuesday, December 5th at 11:00am. A celebration gathering will be held following the service at Marlatt Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Eastlawn Cemetery, 2280 Barton Street East, Hamilton.
