James Whitney

March 3, 1941 – May 22, 2026

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of James Emerson Whitney, at the age of 85, in Dundas, Ontario.

James will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Linda Whitney, and his children and their families: Steven (Gwen), David (Joan), Mark (Joanne), Jamie (Patrick), Jean (Dave), Michael (Julie), Cameron (Edith), and Seth (Bonnie). He will also be dearly missed by his grandchildren: Erin, Mallory, Colleen, Ryan, Jack, Emily, Amaya, and Eliana; and his great-grandchildren: Elle, Illa, Myra, and Will. James was predeceased by his beloved granddaughter, Rachel; his brother David and sister-in-law Fay; and his sister, Ruth Long. He is survived by his brother-in-law, Bill Long; his nephews, Tom and Jim Long; and his niece, Debbie Wilson.

James was born in Brunner, Ontario, to Wesley and Jean Whitney. He was a teacher for more than 30 years and made many lasting friendships throughout his life through his work in accounting, taxes, and computer sales.

James had a generous spirit and was always willing to go above and beyond to lend a helping hand. He travelled throughout the United States on his motorcycle, restored a 1956 MG-A, and was happiest at the cottage in Muskoka on Lake of Bays, puttering around the boathouse and working on various projects. Jim was also an avid watercolour painter, and his creations are proudly displayed in many family homes.

Above all, James was deeply proud of his family. He would often say that his greatest joy was his eight children who grew up to be happy, healthy, contributing members of society. He was so very proud of each of them and loved them all dearly.

As per his wishes, cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held at Marlatt Funeral Home, Swackhamer Chapel, 195 King Street West, Dundas, Ontario, on Thursday, May 28, 2026, from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society. Flowers may also be sent to Marlatt Funeral Home on the day of visitation.
