On Monday morning August 7, 2017 passed peacefully in her sleep after suffering many years of chronic pain and other ailments. Joan was born in Leek, Staffordshire, England on March 31, 1929. She was a shorthand typist. Joan married her handsome Merchant Navy Electrical Engineer Officer Alex Dempster on October 24, 1951 in Northfleet, Kent. They emigrated from England in 1953 and came to Hamilton where they lived for 3 years. They then moved to Dundas and lived a happy life surrounded by wonderful neighbours. They frequently travelled to England to visit parents and relatives. Joan leaves two daughters Sharon Dempster (Joe Palermo) and Ann Moffat (Terry) and four grandchildren Sarah, James, Christopher and Alexandra. She was a great sewer and made her girls clothes when they were younger, and only gave up her knitting when the arthritis in her hands became too great. She was a big fan of the soap opera Coronation Street. When she received an iPad for Christmas, it opened up the possibility to complete puzzles, read ebooks and play card games until the wee hours of the morning. Big thanks to the people who helped Joan in her life. She had the best neighbours and friends who were loving and supportive. Thank you to the PSW’s (Linda, Cathy, and Beth), Dr. Tam Mandy, Dr. Kabir Jalili her denturist and Dr. McDonough her Dentist, who both provided home visits. A special thank you to her best friend Barb for visiting her weekly for the past 10 years, since she was chair ridden. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends at the MARLATT FUNERAL HOME “Swackhamer Chapel”, 195 King Street West, Dundas on Wednesday, August 16th from 2-4 & 6-8pm. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Salvation Army in Joan’s memory would be appreciated by the family. Online condolences may be made at www.marlattfhdundas.com
