

Carmen (Ortiz) Mato, 76, of the East Hartford/Glastonbury area, peacefully entered into eternal life on Monday, December 6, 2021 with her beloved family by her side at Manchester Memorial Hospital. She was the loving wife of the late Edilio Mato. Born in Cidra, Puerto Rico on May 7, 1945, a daughter of the late Teodomiro and Ramona (Santiago) Ortiz, she had been a resident of East Hartford for many years prior to moving to Glastonbury one year ago. A devout catholic, Carmen was a faithful communicant of St. Rose Church, East Hartford and formerly of Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Hartford. She was a talented seamstress who made beautiful clothes, pillows, curtains, and lately facemasks for her family and friends to enjoy. She was also a very good baker who was known for her chocolate cake and Spanish deserts. She also loved watching her soap operas, especially “Novelas” and going to the local casinos to play the slots. Most of all, Carmen was a devoted mother and grandmother who was the “Life of the party” and cherished her time with her entire family.
Carmen is survived by three sons, Jose “Tito” Rivera and his wife, Ana, of Newington, Eddie Ortiz of Glastonbury, Darcy Canales of New Haven; two daughters, Carmen “Titi” Baig of West Hartford, and Rosa “Rosie” Rojas and her husband, Charlie, of East Hartford; ten special grandchildren, Juan “Johnny” Torres of West Hartford, Javier “JJ” Rivera of Bristol, Dana Baig and her husband, Ehad, of West Hartford, Michael Rivera of Middletown, Nadia Baig of West Hartford, Anthony “Tony” Bayron of East Hartford, Breanna “Boogi” Canales of Hartford, Darcy “DJ” Canales, Jr. of East Hartford, Charlie “Machie” Rojas of East Hartford, Jayden Rojas of East Hartford; five adored great-grandchildren, Johnny, Angel, Zachary, Amir, and Avalynn. She also leaves behind a brother, Janner Ortiz of New Britain; a sister, Rosa Santiago of Enfield; many nieces, nephews, former co-workers, and dear friends.
Funeral service will be Monday (December 20, 2021) at 9:45 am from the D’Esopo East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11 am at St. Rose Church, 33 Church Street, East Hartford. Burial will follow at Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home chapel on Sunday afternoon (December 19, 2021) from 1 – 5 pm.
