

Edith Salvatrice (Giarratana) Avila, 99, of Manchester and formerly of East Hartford, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, May 16, 2025 with her beloved family by her side. Edith was the loving wife of 46 years of the late Joseph “Nino” Avila. Born on August 21, 1925 in Floridia, province of Syracuse, Sicily, Italy, a daughter of the late Antonio and Maria (Gallo) Giarratana, she had been a resident of East Hartford for 33 years prior to moving to Manchester 23 years ago. Edith was a graduate of Bulkeley High School in Hartford, class of 1943. Prior to her retirement, Edith was employed for many years by G. Fox & Company in Hartford. She loved traveling with her late husband back to Italy every couple of years to see her relatives and friends. She also liked cooking for her family to enjoy. Most of all, Edith was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
Edith is survived by her son, Anthony “Tony” J. Avila and his wife Rhonda of Manchester and their son, Anthony Jr. of New York City; a daughter, Lia Avila Stein and her partner Frank J. Misseri of East Hartford and Lia’s daughters, Lyndsey and Lisa; and many other extended family members. She also leaves her dear sister-in-law, Mary Dunn Giarratana of Darien; her loving D’Agostino family, especially Paul, Tina, and goddaughter, Maria-Elena D’Agostino; the Gallo families; and the Giarratana families. Besides her husband and parents, Edith was predeceased by her infant sister, Ida Giarratana and her brother, Salvatore Giarratana.
Funeral service will be Friday (May 23, 2025) with a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 12 pm at St. Mary’s Church of North American Martyrs Parish, Main Street, East Hartford. The burial will follow at Mt. St. Benedict Cemetery, (Section X), Bloomfield. There are no calling hours. All attendees are asked to please go directly to the church on Friday afternoon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Edith’s name may be made to a favorite charity of the donor’s choice. Edith’s family would like to extend special thanks to her niece, Sharon Giarratana, for her continued love and support given to Edith and her family. Also, the family extends their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the amazing hospice nurses and aides, especially Sharon, Vita, Betsy, Kathleen and Mariam for their professionalism, love and care.
