Elisa Maria (Orozco) Chaverri, 100, of Vernon and formerly of Glastonbury, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, March 6, 2026, peacefully in her sleep at her residence. She was the loving wife of 55 years of the late Lorenzo Chaverri. Born in Cartago, Costa Rica on December 6, 1925, a daughter of the late Augusto and Hilda (Mora) Orozco. She had been a resident of Glastonbury for over 25 years prior to moving to Vernon one year ago.
Elisa was a retired elementary school teacher who taught many children during her 30-year career in Costa Rica, making an indelible mark on so many of her students that, 50, 60, and even 70 years later, many of those students sought her out whenever she visited Costa Rica, wanting to spend time with her. In her younger years, she was an amazing baker, making complex and beautiful wedding and special occasion cakes as a side business. When she moved to the United States back in the 1970’s, she taught Spanish as a second language at a private school for several years.
In her later years, she became a talented craftsperson, teaching herself to make special hand-made birthday cards for family members using embossing techniques on Vellum paper, as well as little trinket boxes out of used Christmas, Easter, and birthday cards. She was also an excellent cook, cooking delicious dishes, soups, breads, and desserts for her kids and grandkids.
Elisa was a woman of strong faith and prayer, who never missed an opportunity to share the Good News of the Gospel with anyone who would listen, and always saying goodbye with a heartfelt “God bless you!” She devotedly read her Bible, committing to memory many verses, including Psalms 91 and 23 in their entirety, reciting them as recently as this year!!
She was a happy, amazing, kind, and generous-to-a-fault mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend to anyone she met. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her.
Elisa is survived by two caring sons, Jerry E. Chaverri and his wife Victoria of Lancaster, TX; S. Tony Chaverri and his wife Virginia of Seymour; her sister Dinorah Bejarano of Costa Rica; twelve grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren whom she adored; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
She was predeceased by her two eldest sons, Oscar L. Chaverri and Luis C. Chaverri.
A memorial service celebrating Elisa’s life will be held on Saturday (March 28th) at 11:00 am at the Calvary Southbury Church, 354 Kettletown Road, Southbury with Pastor John Eastwood and her nephew, Al Rodrigues, Jr. officiating. Private burial will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. The D’Esopo East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford has been entrusted with the care of the funeral arrangements.
