

Born in Hartford, CT on May 7, 1930, she was a daughter to the late John and Stefania (Dobosz) Stanek and was predeceased by her brother Chester Stanek.
Evelyn was a resident of East Hartford, CT since 1961 and adored being a loving wife to the late Joseph T. Gumkowski for over 60 years. Evelyn was a proud devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who cherished every moment spent with her family.
Evelyn is survived by her son, John Gumkowski and his wife Laurie of East Haddam; her daughter, Mary Crowell and her husband Bruce of Woodstock; a daughter-in-law, Linda Gumkowski of Middletown; five adored grandchildren - one predeceased; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends. Along with her beloved husband, brother, and parents, Evelyn predeceased by her son, Mark Gumkowski of Middletown.
Evelyn graduated Hartford Public High School, worked as a homemaker, and retired from administrative work at local banking and IT firms. Evelyn led a long and happy life, full of enthusiasm and laughter - cracking jokes and brightening others’ days until the end.
She had a love for knitting throughout her life. Whether knitting for her family streamside while her husband trout fished, or completing over 1,000 one of a kind hats for premature babies, she was active into her 90’s.
A devout catholic, she was a faithful communicant and lecter at Our Lady of Peace Church in East Hartford where she was also an active member of the church Retiree’s Club. Evelyn was a longtime golfer and was a member of the East Hartford Women’s Golf League. She was also a member of the Luna Club.
Private funeral service and burial at Silver Lane Cemetery in East Hartford will be at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Evelyn’s name may be made to a charity of choice. The family wishes to give heartfelt thanks and appreciation to her caregiver Charity, as well as the hospice team at the VNA of Vernon. The D’Esopo East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford has been entrusted with the care of the funeral arrangements.
