Marie Mae Geraldine Odess

August 13, 1954January 17, 2021

On Sunday, January 17, 2021, Marie Mae Geraldine (Fongemie) Odess passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 66 at her home in East Hartford. Marie was born on August 13, 1954 in Grand Isle, Maine to Leo and Ozianne (Roussel) Fongemie. Marie and her family moved to Connecticut when she was 8 years old. She was educated in the Hartford Public School system. She graduated from Bulkeley High School in 1972, where she sang in the choir and was a member of the Pep Club, with her life-long friend, Faith (Cotton) DeCarlo. She sold Tupperware for many years and went on to become a Tupperware manager at Century Parties in East Hartford. Marie’s main ambition was nursing, since she cared so much for other people. Marie’s first nursing job was in Pediatrics, at Grove Hill Medical Center in New Britain. She then worked as the Charge Nurse for many years at New England Dermatology in Vernon, until she retired in 2020. Marie enjoyed reading, relaxing on the patio, and spending time with her beloved family. She loved going to the casino to play the penny slots, and she enjoyed traveling with her husband, the love of her life, who she was proudly married to for 44 years. She always put others before herself and she was known for her kindness by all who knew her.

Marie was preceded in death by her mother and father, Leo and Ozianne (Roussel) Fongemie, and her sister, Lorraine Fongemie. She is survived by her husband, Bruce Odess of East Hartford; her daughters, Leah (Odess) Smith of Wethersfield, Nichole Odess of Bristol, and Bobbi Odess of Glastonbury; her beloved grandchildren, Jasmine Odess, Jordan Odess, Destiny Johnson, Jaylin Hull, Kayla Smith, Landon Smith, and A’shya Shaw; her siblings, Betty Oakes, Lee Fongemie, Aline and Toby Clouse, Jackie Fongemie, and Willard and Diana Fongemie, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Due to Covid-19, a celebration of Marie’s life will be held at a future date. The D’Esopo-East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford has been entrusted with the arrangements. To share a memory of Marie with her family, please visit

I remember going to Marie's house when we were kids, we first met as classmates at Michael D. Fox School. I'm not sure how old we were maybe about seven but I'm sure Faith, her best and forever friend would remember! When I think of Marie I remember a sweet person with a smile on her face and always a ball of energy! I know how much she will be missed. Please know my heart goes out to her family and all those that loved her.

My tante Marie was so beautiful inside and out. I remember sleeping over her house as a young girl and watching Annie for the first time. In the morning she made me pancakes. ☺️💖 May her light and love live on through her kids & grand kids.
