Marylee A. Hickey, 66, of East Hartford and Florida, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, October 12, 2018 in Florida. Born in Hartford on July 14, 1952, a daughter of Mary (Heldmann) Hickey and the late LP Morton Hickey, Jr., she had been a life-long resident of East Hartford prior to moving to Florida in 2015 to enjoy her retirement. Marylee was a graduate of East Catholic High School in Manchester, Class of 1970, and St. Joseph College in West Hartford, Class of 1974 where she earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Education/Special Education. She later received her Master’s Degree in Education also from St. Joseph College. Prior to her retirement in 2011, Marylee was a Special Education teacher for 37 years for the town of East Hartford Board of Education, teaching at East Hartford High School, O’Brien Elementary School, and Pitkin Elementary School. During her years at O’Brien Elementary School, she was the “double-dutch jump roping” coach for several years. Marylee was a loyal member of the Republican Party in East Hartford and served the town of East Hartford as a Town Councilor from November 1987 through November 2001. While on the Town Council, she served on the Ordinance Committee, Fees Committee, Personnel & Pensions Subcommittee, and the East Hartford EMS commission.
Marylee leaves behind her very dear friend and companion, Ron Wilson of East Hartford; her mother, Mary Heldmann Hickey of Wesley Chapel, FL; her caring sister, Jane (Hickey) Tyler and her husband Craig of San Antonio, FL; one adored niece, Rebecca (Fortin) Caven and her husband Andrew of Wesley Chapel, FL and their son Noah; two cherished nephews, Michael Fortin and his wife Stephanie of Vernon and their son Matthew, Daniel Fortin and his wife Ece of New Britain; many aunts, uncles, cousins, and dear friends. In addition to her father, she was predeceased by her grandparents, Levi PM Hickey and Ruth (Stillman) Hickey; and George and Mary (Noonan) Heldmann.
While her love of children is evident by her teaching career, her dedication and support to Becca, Mike and Dan was unwavering. Marylee was like a second mother to them and a second “Auntie” to all their friends. Her holiday pies baked with the children were a neighborhood tradition enjoyed by many.
