Maureen was born on August 13, 1950, in Hartford, Connecticut. She grew up in East Hartford and attended St. Mary’s Catholic School and East Hartford High School, where she was a cheerleader and a member of the dive team. She graduated from the University of Hartford.
Maureen built a long and distinguished career in Democratic politics, both locally and nationally. Her commitment to public life began in the 1960s, when she volunteered for local East Hartford candidates. She went on to work at the Connecticut General Assembly, including for both Democratic House and Senate Leadership, as well as for CT Governor William A. O’Neill. Nationally, she worked on the Carter/Mondale Presidential campaign and for U.S. Senator John Glenn and then U.S. Senator Al Gore, among others.
In 1997, Maureen joined John B. Larson’s campaign to succeed retiring Congresswoman Barbara Kennelly, beginning what became one of the defining professional relationships of her life. She served for many years in Congressman Larson’s Hartford District Office, ultimately as District Chief of Staff, and recently retired after decades of loyal service. To Maureen, the office was never simply a workplace; it was a community, a second family. She was deeply dedicated to Congressman Larson, his staff, the First Congressional District, and the constituents who relied on the office for help.
Outside of politics, Maureen loved her home, her yard, and the quiet satisfaction of tending things carefully. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, and sharing food with the people she loved. She also had a deep love of animals and found comfort and joy in caring for her pets, who were part of her family.
During the past year, Maureen was blessed to have the support and care of her daughter, Moriah, whose strength, devotion, and presence through Maureen’s illness gave her comfort; allowing them to spend precious time together.
Maureen was predeceased by her husband, Jeffrey Baver, and by her parents, Edward Moriarty, Jr. and Helen Olshesky Moriarty. She is survived by her daughter, Moriah Moriarty; her stepson, Jeremy Baver, and his wife, Katie Hanley; her stepdaughter, Stephanie Kexel; her sister, Christine Casey, and her husband, Ted Casey; her sister, Regina Dardzienski; and her brother, Stephan Moriarty. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Bridget, Alexandra, and Charlie Baver; her nephew, Bart Casey; and extended family, friends, colleagues, and loved ones who will remember her loyalty, intelligence, generosity, and strong spirit.
Her family would like to thank the wonderful doctors, nurses, and staff at the Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center, especially Dr. Jonathan Steinmetz, for the care, kindness, and support they provided to Maureen and her family throughout her illness.
Calling hours will be June 12, 2026, at D’Esopo Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter St, East Hartford from 3pm to 5pm. Burial will be private. To leave a memory or message for Maureen’s family, please visit: http://www.desopoeh.com/
