

Mercedes Vega, 74, of Manchester, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Monday, April 20, 2026. She was born on September 15, 1951, in Humacao, Puerto Rico, and was the daughter of the late Lorenzo Sr. and Inocencia (Burgos) Vega. Mercedes was a proud graduate of Weaver High School in Hartford, Class of 1969. She dedicated her life to raising her children and caring for her family.
In her free time, Mercedes enjoyed watching television, especially her favorite soap operas, MSNBC, and reality shows such as Big Brother, Survivor, and The Amazing Race. She also loved playing games, including trivia, solitaire, and rummy. Above all, Mercedes cherished her role as a mother, grandmother, and sister, always putting her family first, often showing her love to her grandkids through home-cooked meals.
She is survived by her three beloved children: Carlos Noel Vega and his girlfriend, Nancy Santana, of Bristol; Johanna Tirado of Manchester; and Jessica Tirado of Hartford. She also leaves behind her six adored grandchildren: Rosa; Jadah and her boyfriend, Dwayne; Jaylon; Ariana; Jaylise; and Jordhan. Mercedes is further survived by her five sisters Andrea, Carmen, Gladys, Myrna, and Nelly, and her three brothers, Lorenzo Jr., Frank, and Felix. She will be deeply missed by her lifelong best friend since the age of 14, Wanda Baez, as well as many nieces, nephews, and dear friends.
In addition to her parents, Lorenzo Vega Sr. and Inocencia Vega, Mercedes was predeceased by her son, Ismael Nunez; her sister, Iris; and her brother, Ramon.
A funeral service to honor Mercedes will be held on Monday, April 27, 2026, at 12:30 pm at the D’Esopo East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford. Burial will follow in Mount Saint Benedict Cemetery, Bloomfield. Calling hours will be held prior to the service from 11 am – 12:30 pm at the funeral home chapel.
