
Pauline F. Bailey, of East Hartford, beloved wife of Carlton Bailey for 57 years, passed away peacefully with her caring family by her side on Monday (June 29, 2009). She was born August 11, 1924 to Edmund and Vina (Harrington) Fisher in Hartford. Moving to Lebanon, NH she attended local schools and went on to Keene State College graduating in 1945. Following graduation she moved to Connecticut and taught elementary school in West Hartford. During that time she spent one year in Edinburgh, Scotland as a Fulbright Exchange Teacher. While there Pauline had the great pleasure along with other exchange teachers of being presented to the Queen of England during a garden party at the palace. Living in Scotland provided her the opportunity of studying Scottish history and architecture at the University of Edinburgh. Following her return to the United States and marriage she taught for two years in Kentucky while her husband was stationed with the U. S. Army at Fort Knox. Later she completed her teaching career in East Hartford where they resided and raised their family. Pauline served on the Board of Directors of the East Hartford Visiting Nurses Association for seven years. During this time she helped start the Visiting Nurses Association Day Care Center. She was a long time active member of the South Congregational Church in East Hartford, a member of East Hartford Women's Club, a life member of the NEA, and the East Hartford Retired Teachers' Association. In addition to her husband, Pauline is survived by a son, Carlton W. Bailey and his wife, Nancy, of Middletown; two daughters, Lindy Sue Bailey of Hollywood, FL, and Jill Bailey Stebbins and her husband, David, of Coventry. She also leaves the loves of her life, her three grandchildren, Dustin Bailey, Samantha Stebbins, and Brian Stebbins; five sisters-in-law and their husbands, many nieces, nephews and two cousins, Gloria Cappitello and Karlene Shea. 'Polly' will be sadly missed by several close friends from college, Langford School in East Hartford, and her church. A Memorial Service will be held at South Congregational Church in East Hartford at a later date to be announced. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. There are no callings hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Pauline's memory may be made to the South Congregational Church Memorial Fund, 1301 Forbes Street, East Hartford, Connecticut 06118.
