
Richard O. ""Dick"" Setzer, 93, of East Hartford, peacefully entered into eternal rest on Saturday (February 2, 2013) at his home surrounded by his caring family. He was the loving husband to the late Charlotte (Lang) Setzer and the late Elsie (Luxemberg) Setzer. Born in Mildred, PA on July 27, 1919, a son of the late Albert and Rose (Bishop) Setzer, he had resided in East Hartford for over seventy years. He was a graduate of Bernice High School, Class of 1936 in Bernice, PA. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy who served on the aircraft carrier, U.S.S. Hancock, during World War II and was awarded seven Battle Stars. He later worked for two years at the Civilian Conservation Camp. Prior to his retirement he was employed for 22 years by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, East Hartford and also had worked as a Prison Guard for the State of Connecticut at the former Wethersfield Prison. Richard was a member of the U.S.S. Hancock CV/CVA 19 Association; the Circle 8 Square Dance Club, East Hartford; and a former member of South Congregational Church, East Hartford where he was also the church sexton for several years. He was an avid and loyal life-long fan of the Boston Red Sox who was so pleased to see them win two World Series. Most of all, Richard was a proud grandfather who loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Richard is survived by two sons, Alan J. Setzer and his wife, Candace, of East Hartford with whom he made his home, Owen Richard Setzer and his wife, Joan, of Newington; a stepson, Professor David Graham in Oregon; seven special grandchildren, Jessica Setzer and her husband, Michael Makowski, of East Hartford, Rachael Romaniw and her husband, Kenneth, of South Windsor, Nancy Turner and her husband, Michael, of Vernon, Eric Setzer in Massachusetts, Matthew Toone of Newington, David and Daniel Setzer, both of Newington; four adored great grandchildren who were the ""Light of his Life"", Mya Romaniw, Kaylee Turner, Leah Romaniw, and Jakob Turner. He also leaves a brother, Donald Setzer of Sayre, PA; three sisters, Marion Twilleger of Endicott, NY, Shirley Taft of Dushore, PA, Celine McGlynn and her husband, Jack, of Wilkes Barre, PA; several nieces and nephews.
Richard's family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday, February 5 from 4-7 p.m. at the D'Esopo-East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter St., East Hartford. Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family at Veteran's Memorial Field-Hillside Cemetery, East Hartford.
