

Robert S. “Slugger” Alger, Sr., 87, of East Hartford, loving husband of 61 years of the late Elaine M. (Trotter) Alger, peacefully went to be with our Lord and his wife on Thursday, July 18, 2024 surrounded by his caring family at Hartford Hospital. Born in New London on July 31, 1936, a son of the late Harold and Cecilia Alger, he had been a resident of East Hartford for over the past 61 years. Robert was a proud veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he was a jet plane mechanic.
Prior to his retirement, Robert was employed by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft-Fuel Cell Division in South Windsor for 40 years as a Fuel Cell Operator. He was an avid fisherman and boater who liked taking his family for boat rides and pulling them on their ski bob. He also was a talented avid golfer who enjoyed his annual golfing trips to Lake Morey, Vermont and Mt. Snow, Vermont with his son and friends and family members. He loved baseball and was a Farm League and Little League coach for several years in the East Hartford National Little League at McAuliffe Park. He was also a champion coach and pitcher in softball at Pratt & Whitney softball league. Robert was an avid gardener and took pride in the appearance of his yard. He also was a loyal fan of the UConn Women’s basketball team and attending games with his daughter. He always looking forward to spending time with his immediate family. Along with his beloved wife and parents, Robert was predeceased by all of his older siblings.
Robert is survived by a son, Robert Stephen Alger, Jr. and his wife Toni of Charlotte, NC; a daughter, Diane Wilks and her husband Keyd of East Hartford; four grandchildren, Justin Alger and his wife Christina of Tolland, Jeffrey Alger and his wife Audrey of Hebron, Lauryn Wilks of Hartford, Lexus Marshall of Hartford; four great-grandchildren, Nolan James Alger, Wyatt Finnley Alger, Nora Russell, Collin Russell; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
Funeral service will be Friday (July 26th) at 11 am at the D’Esopo East Hartford Memorial Chapel, 30 Carter Street. East Hartford. Private burial will be held at the convenience of the family. Robert’s family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday (July 25th) from 4:30 - 6:30 pm at the funeral home chapel.
