S. Jane Wieder

November 27, 1918August 29, 2018

S. Jane Wieder’s soul peacefully and joyfully left her body on August 29, 2018, at the age of 99. She was a widow of Karl H. Kuhlen and also of John W. (Bill) Wieder, Jr. Jane was born in New London, Ohio, the daughter of Claude and Bertha (King) Bracy. Her life of service to others began with chores on the family farm, including delivering milk to the town along with her sister, Myrtle. She graduated from New London High School in 1936 and Ohio State University in 1940, and later received a Master’s degree in education from Temple University. For 33 years she lovingly and enthusiastically helped elementary students in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Connecticut along their educational paths, while at the same time providing a nurturing home for her husband Karl and their two sons. After the death of the first husband in July, 1972, Jane set about rebuilding her life. She became an active member and volunteer at the First Church of Christ in Wethersfield, and intensified her involvement in competitive bridge (achieving the rank of life master). She also enjoyed attending many elder hostels with her sister Myrtle. Jane met and then married her second husband, Bill Wieder, on August 22, 1992. They traveled extensively and shared love, support and companionship until his death in 2017.

Jane is survived by two sons, David Kuhlen and wife Barbara of Hershey, PA and James Kuhlen and wife Carol of East Hampton, CT; three grandsons, Jeremy Kuhlen and wife Dana of Richmond, VA, Brian Kuhlen of Winthrop, MA and Scott Kuhlen of East Hampton; two stepchildren, John Wieder and Kelman Wieder; two nephews, Philip and Charles Glanville and families, as well as three great-grandchildren, Jake, Kate and Anna Blair (children of Jeremy and Dana Kuhlen). Her only sister, Myrtle Glanville, predeceased her.

A celebration of Jane’s life will be held Friday (September 7) at 1 p.m. at the First Church of Christ, 250 Main St, Wethersfield, CT 06109. The D’Esopo-East Hartford Memorial Chapel assisted the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Church of Christ, Wethersfield.

Jane was also predeceased by my father, her nephew, Richard Glanville. He thought the world of her. Up to and including convincing me that she was in every airplane that flew over us when I was a child. Rick and Jane often shared a wonderful sense of humor and could be found giggling together at many family gatherings. Although we never lived in the same state, I was proud to follow her into the education field in 1991. This great lady was well loved by all of her nieces and nephews. Rest well good and faithful servant.
