Shirley (Newman) Barrett, 67, of Storrs died Thursday, (October 20, 2005) with her caring husband, James, by her side. Shirley was born in Hartford, a daughter of the late William and Alice (Bowers) Newman. A 32 year member of Alcoholics Anonymous, Shirley dedicated her life to helping people by working as an Addictions Counselor at Manchester Memorial Hospital, after completing the DARC Program at Manchester Community College. She was also a member of the Matt Talbot Retreat Movement and took part in a senior bowling league. An avid UCONN Woman's Basketball fan, she was a season ticket holder for many years. Shirley also enjoyed her quiet, alone time, meditating with a power greater than her own. Besides her husband, Shirley leaves a wonderful and loving family, her daughters, Robin Henne of Hampton Falls, NH and Kimberly Macomber, and her husband, Richard of Coventry; her son, Joseph Gilman Lagasse, Jr. of Manchester; her step-sons, Ronald Barrett of Wethersfield and Gary Barrett of East Hartford; her brothers, William Newman and his wife, Leslie of Brooklyn, and Andy Newman and his wife, Colleen of Pennsylvania; her sister, Fran Bradley of Simsbury; and her grandchildren, Nicole Garcia and her husband, Rico, Tara Henne, Robert Michaud, Saully Guanda, Rachael and Kristen Lagasse and Alex and Rose Macomber. Her brother, Earl Newman and sister, Andrea Hassett predeceased Shirley. Funeral Service will be Tuesday, October 25 at 10 a.m. with the Reverend Nicholas Cessaro officiating at the D'ESOPO-EAST HARTFORD MEMORIAL CHAPEL, 30 Carter Street, East Hartford. Friends and relatives may visit the family on Monday, 4 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home chapel.
