

Wanda T. (Rukowicz) Shemo, 95, of Madison and formerly of East Hartford, peacefully passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at The Hearth at Tuxis Pond in Madison. She was the loving wife of the late Joseph S. Shemo. Born in Shenandoah, PA on October 15, 1920 she was a daughter of the late John and Sophie (Palowski) Rukowicz. Prior to her retirement, Wanda was employed for many years as a Teacher’s Aide by the town of East Hartford-Board of Education. Wanda loved to garden and can her home-grown vegetables for everyone to enjoy year round. She also liked to sew, knit, fish, and go to the beach to be near the seashore.
Wanda is survived by her devoted son, John J. Shemo and his wife, Deborah, of South Windsor; four special grandsons, Damon Shemo and his wife Michele of Tolland, Kyle Shemo and his wife Kara of Wethersfield, Steven Pernal and his wife Jennifer of Old Saybrook, Peter Pernal of Clinton; and six cherished great-grandchildren, Jillian and Amanda Pernal, Aubrie and Caleb Shemo, Landon and Ryder Shemo. She also leaves her son-in-law, Peter Pernal of Mount Joy, PA; a very special niece, Patricia Rukowicz of North Branford who was a dedicated caregiver to Wanda; several other nieces, nephews, and dear friends. Besides her beloved husband and parents Wanda was predeceased by her daughter, Diana Pernal formerly of Old Saybrook.
Funeral services and burial will be private and held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours. Wanda’s family would like to extend their sincere gratitude and appreciation to the entire staffs at The Hearth at Tuxis Pond in Madison and VITAS Hospice of Glastonbury for their professionalism, care, compassion, and love given to Wanda and her entire family.
