John Barton Berg, Sr. went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 1, 2026, at the age of 98. He was preceded in death by his parents Maxie Louise Stone Berg and Lewis Berg, brother James Berg along with most of his friends. He is survived by his wife of 75 years, the love of his life, Charlotte Sprague Berg. He is also survived by his daughter Susan (Dr. David) Close, Dr. John (Debbie) Berg, Jr.; his grandchildren, Courtney (Bradden), Nathan, John (McKenzie), Barton (Laura) and Kelley (Chris); and his great grandchildren Nathaniel, Daniel, Connor, Jackson, and Beckett.
John is a retired CPA from Provident Life Insurance Company (Unum). He previously was an agent for the Internal Revenue Service and taught a class on income tax at the University of Chattanooga and taught accounting and business law at Chattanooga State Technical Community College.
He was a member of Brainerd Baptist Church and was previously a member at Brainerd Presbyterian Church where he was a deacon, elder, and a trustee.
He graduated from Central High School, class of 1946, and the University of Chattanooga where he was a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. He wrestled for UC where he won a third-place medal in the Southeastern Conference tournament.
After college, John joined the United States Air Force where he and Charlotte were stationed in Cheyenne, Wyoming and Fairbanks, Alaska during the Korean conflict. While in Alaska, they became very close friends with the Hickersons and the Osbornes. After separation from the service, they had an annual reunion with these friends for over 50 years with their 50th reunion being held back in Fairbanks, Alaska, where they met.
Having a heart for Jesus Christ and a love for teaching, he led Sunday school for many years. A great tribute to John would be memorial gifts to be made to the Bethel Bible Village or Bible in the Schools, both of which he supported until his passing. Memorial gifts potentially can affect children’s lives over their lifetime.
A very special thank you to the incredible loving staff at Rosewood Senior Living and care giver Jan Armao as they always did everything to make dad comfortable and feel special.
A Celebration of John’s Life will be held in the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home on Sunday July 26, 2026, at 3:00 pm with Rev. Eric Mullinax officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1:00 pm. He will be laid to rest on Monday July 27, 2026, at 11:00 am in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors rendered by the United States Air Force Honor Guard.
