It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of David James Sparks, who died at home on January 22, 2025, at the age of 80.
David was the devoted husband of Violet Sparks for 55 beautiful years and a proud father to Timothy Sparks, Cherina Sparks (spouse David), and Jonathan Sparks (spouse Carol). He was a beloved grandfather to KC and Owen, step-grandfather to Tyler, Johnathan, and Thomas Pfaff, and a cherished brother to Teresa Taekema (spouse Sydney). David was predeceased by his sister, Cathryn (Vlad) Brecka, and his parents, Clara and James Sparks.
Born on February 13, 1944, in Calgary, David was the youngest of three children and the only boy. He shared a close bond with his two loving sisters, a connection that remained strong throughout their lives.
David will be remembered for his dry sense of humor, clever dad jokes, and quick wit. In his family’s words, “The Family Who Laughs Together” was an apt description of the Sparks household, a testament to the joy he brought to every gathering.
A man of many talents and passions, David was an amateur artist, woodworker, photographer, and avid reader. He was a dedicated family genealogist, uncovering and preserving the Sparks family’s rich history. An early adopter of technology, David played a key role in modernizing Alberta Environment’s use of computers as a surveyor and systems analyst during his 30-year career there.
David’s hobbies reflected his curiosity and love for life. His extensive collections included a library of books, model planes, cars, rockets, coins, stamps, and art. He also had a knack for repairing old books. David loved the simple pleasures of life—feeding wild birds, squirrels, and rabbits in his backyard, gardening, reading, and cheering for the Edmonton Oilers. While not a frequent traveler, he and his family created cherished memories at many airshows together.
In addition to his professional and personal pursuits, David was a founding member of the Alberta Ferret Society, dedicating 15 years to the education about and rescue of ferrets. His compassion and commitment extended beyond his immediate circle, reflecting his generous spirit.
In 2019, David and Violet celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary, a milestone that epitomized their enduring love and partnership. Their marriage, built on a foundation of laughter and mutual support, serves as an inspiration to all who knew them.
The family kindly requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in David’s memory to organizations that supported him in his later years and continue to help local animals. Suggested charities include the Edmonton Cross Cancer Institute, the Heart & Stroke Foundation, and the Edmonton Humane Society.
David’s kindness, humor, and unwavering love for his family and community will be deeply missed but never forgotten. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A memorial will be held at Memories Funeral Home (13404 St. Albert Trail in Edmonton, AB) at 2:00PM on February 15, 2025. Viewing will be available starting at noon. A reception will be held after the service.
