February 17, 1930 – November 25, 2024
Betty G. Flores was welcomed into the arms of our Lord Jesus on November 25, 2024. She was surrounded by all the love in the world as she transitioned from her earthly body to her eternal soul.
Betty was born on February 17, 1930, in El Paso, Texas. She was the beloved eldest sister to her six siblings. Not only did Betty help raise her siblings, but she also helped care for several nieces and nephews.
At the tender age of 18, Betty left El Paso for New York City. She received her degree in cosmetology and worked as a hair and wig stylist in Manhattan. She returned to El Paso to help run the family business after the death of her father, Antonio (Tony). She then worked for the County of El Paso in various management positions. After retiring, Betty devoted her time to volunteering and doing what she loved most: helping others.
Betty was ahead of her time. She spoke the truth and lived on her own terms until her very last moment on this earth. She deeply loved her family and friends and had a tender heart for children and animals. Betty enjoyed her garden, flowers, the Franklin Mountains, the beautiful El Paso clouds, and jazz and blues music. She was a fantastic cook, known especially for her Thanksgiving candied yams and Christmas apple cakes. Betty was a loving and unique human being. Her independent, feisty, and funny spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Betty called everyone "baby" and had an infectious laugh that made you laugh even harder. If someone was fortunate enough to befriend Betty, she would consider them family, and they would become her "Aunt Betty" too. Betty was blessed with amazing genetics and often shocked people with her youthful appearance. She was strong and healthy for the majority of her life and never considered herself elderly. She was often the only person in a group who didn’t need glasses—even at 94 years old! Our family would joke that the hospital must have made a mistake with her year of birth!
She will be warmly welcomed to heaven by her first husband, Charles H. Johnson; her mother, Teresa E. Flores; her father, Antonio O. Flores; her sister, Rosie Acosta; her nephew, Moises "Sonny" Flores Jr.; her niece, Terry Ann Flores; her niece, Teresa Kidder; and her pets "Satin," "Boy," "Bonita," "Bessie," and "Kate."
She is survived by her siblings: Irene Caine (Irving†), Norma Kidder (Phil†), Tony Flores Jr. (Danette), Ingrid Flores (Louis†), and Mark Flores (Kathy). Her nieces and nephews include Leigh Kersh (Richard), Robert Flores (DeeDee, Bo, and Kristen), Phillip Kidder, Roseann Rodriguez (Nicole, Aaron, and Danielle), Vivianne Dhupa (Sarit and Kiran), Nathan Flores (Gia and Apollonia), Jason (Victoria) and Allyson Flores, and Michael and Matthew Flores. In addition, she is survived by long-time family friend Wilmer Bonilla (Amelia) and her cat, "Cami."
Our family is eternally grateful to Karina Hernandez, Luz Elena Dominguez, and Yesenia Mendoza for their dedicated and heartfelt care of our precious sister and aunt. They selflessly cared for Betty as if she were their own mother. Additional thanks to Hospice of El Paso (Yesenia and team) and Caprock Home Health (Oly San Roman) for their compassionate and attentive care.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, February 15th at 9:30 am at Funeraria del Angel Central, 3839 Montana Avenue. Betty requested that her ashes be scattered in New York, the place where she left her heart many years ago.
Thank you, our sweet Aunt Betty, for allowing us the privilege of taking care of you. You will always be our bright, twinkling star!
— Vivianne, Sarit, Kiran and Ingrid
I'll be seeing you,
In all the familiar places
That this heart of mine embraces
All day through.
— Billie Holiday, "I'll Be Seeing You"
