

Col. Dale A. Hawkins, U.S. Army (ret.), passed away on Wednesday, July 22, 2015. She was born on January 7, 1921 in Clarksdale, MS. She graduated from Nursing School at Baptist Hospital in Memphis, TN in 1943. She graduated from Nurse Anesthetists School at Brooke Army Hospital in 1954. During her military career she was awarded many commendations and medals including the National Defense Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Viet Nam Service Medal Republic of Viet Nam Campaign, Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Army Occupation Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Amer Camp Medal, EAME Camp Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal. Col. Hawkins was stationed at Camp Rucker, AL in 1943; Station Hospital, Camp Shelby, MS from 1943-1944; 20th Field Hospital, ETO from 1944-1945; Tilton General Hospital, Ft. Dix, NJ from 1946-1948; Germany from 1948-1951; William Beaumont Army Hospital, Ft. Bliss, TX from 1952-1953, 1957-1958, and 1969-1972; Brooke Army Hospital, Ft. Sam Houston, TX 1953-1955; 48th Surgical Hospital in Japan in 1955; 121st Evacuation Hospital in Korea, 1956; Walter Reed General Hospital in Washington, DC from 1958-1960; USAH in Ft. Huachuca, AZ from 1960-1961; 130th Station Hospital in Germany from 1961-1963; Valley Forge General Hospital, Phoenixville, PA from 1963-1966; 45th Surgical Hospital, RVN from 1966-1967 and Letterman General Hospital in San Francisco, CA from 1967-1969. Upon her retirement, Col. Hawkins resided in El Paso. She was a generous and compassionate person who supported people, animals, and causes and loved her dogs. Col. Hawkins was preceded in death by her parents, John and Arrie; brothers, O. J. Hawkins, Howard Hawkins, Woodley Hawkins and sister, Winnie (Hawkins) Cook. She is survived by her nephew Howard Hawkins (Martha) Cook; nieces, Betty Lou (Larry) Elliot, and Joeanne Hawkins; great nephew, Jonathan (Rebecca) Cook, several other nieces and nephews, in addition to close friends, Jorge and Elena Fierro who provided wonderful care and support for many years, Marvin Roberts, and Steve and Letty Mazziotti. A special thanks to Dr. Bender and the personal caregivers for their time and compassion. Visitation will be Monday, July 27, 2015 from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with Funeral Service at 1 p.m. at Funeraria del Angel Martin Central. Rite of Committal will follow at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery with full military honors.
