Deweylou Starr McGinley Macon, 93, a shining example of a devoted daughter, mother, wife, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed from this earthly realm into the arms of her Savior on Thursday, October 15, 2026. She leaves behind a rich legacy of love, faith, and dedication that will continue to inspire all who knew her. Heaven has surely welcomed a new angel.
Deweylou had so many wonderful talents and attributes, among them:
• She was an ardent follower of Christ and a member of the Church of Christ.
• Family meant the world to Deweylou. She reveled in engagement with her closely-knit family unit. Love surrounded the home, with Deweylou being the matriarch, bringing the generations together. Her loved ones being near was her “heaven on earth.”
• She was a fine musician who played the piano and the violin and sang with perfect pitch. Deweylou loved music in all forms, as she had an eclectic love of music and was particularly fond of country music.
• She had an immense talent for cooking. Barbecue ribs, macaroni and cheese, steaks, chicken fried steak and cream gravy, biscuits, cornbread, peach cobbler, chocolate and banana puddings, sweet tea, homemade ice cream were only a few of her culinary specialties.
• She had a great love for canines; there was never a time in her life that she did not have a loving dog beside her, whether a Pekingese, fox terrier, Samoyed, poodles, a cocker spaniel, mixed varieties, and most recently, pugs.
Born in Alpine, Texas, on July 3, 1933, to Dewey and Velma McGinley, Deweylou grew up in Monahans, Veribest, and Ballinger. A bright and dedicated student, she graduated as the valedictorian of the Ballinger High School Class of 1950. In her early career, after graduation, she brought her sharp intellect and warm personality to her work as a dental hygienist, a legal secretary, and a customer service representative for Texas Electric.
Her life changed beautifully when she moved with her family to Matador, Texas. It was there that she met the love of her life, Don Macon, who was teaching and coaching at Matador (now Motley County) High School. Together, they built a beautiful life centered around Christianity, family, community, and their two children, Starrla and Kirk.
As Don’s career as a coach and school administrator took them primarily to West Texas school districts, Deweylou was the bedrock of their family. They moved from Matador to Slaton, and then to Enochs, where they both served the Bula school system. Their journey continued to New Home, Sweetwater, Marathon, Cloudcroft, NM, and Stanton, before eventually leading them to Midland.
While her husband was successful in education, Deweylou built a meaningful career of her own in the education field, a professional achievement that brought her immense pride. Over the years, she touched countless lives as a teacher's aide, substitute teacher, school secretary, and library assistant. She retired from public education after serving for nine years in the library at Midland High School, but her passion for education and Christian influence kept her going; she soon returned to the stacks to serve in the secondary library at Midland Christian School.
In 2008, following her final retirement from MCS, Deweylou and Don relocated from Midland to El Paso to be close to their son, Kirk, and to enjoy well-deserved retirement life in the Sun City.
Deweylou was greeted into heaven by those who preceded her in death: husband Don, daughter Starrla, and Deweylou’s parents Dewey and Velma McGinley.
She is survived by son Dr. Don Kirk Macon and loving pug Sassy of El Paso, son-in-law Dudley McMinn of Midland, granddaughters Kelsey Tatsch (and partner Jimmy Evans) of Midland and Haley McMinn of Lubbock, and great-granddaughters Addison Tatsch of Lubbock and Brynlee Tatsch of Midland.
Arrangements are with Funeraria del Angel Evergreen East. Visitation will be on Thursday, October 22, from 6-8 p.m. The graveside service will be on Friday, October 23, at 9 a.m.
Special recognition goes to the caring teams at Avir at Tierra Este and Three Oaks Hospice.
