

Irene M Borunda, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and proud American, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2026, in El Paso, Texas, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on February 25, 1945, in Guanacevi, Durango, Mexico to Guillermo Abraham Martinez and Clemencia Moya Martinez. Irene was one of eight children growing up. After moving to the United States, Irene attended Zach White Elementary, Ross Middle School and Burges High School where she graduated in 1965.
Irene devoted her life in many ways. In her early years she involved herself in school and parish life, contributing her time and energy to St. Joseph Catholic church and school. She helped establish the school’s Sports Booster Club. Having been involved at Burges’ sports, she shared her love of sports as a softball coach for the “Rebels,” leaving a lasting impact on the young athletes she guided. Irene was also involved in The Roncalli Club at St. Raphael Church guided by Msgr. Smith. For several years, Irene worked at the County of El Paso, Texas A&M Extension Service and became a master gardener. Irene played an important role in the family business Borunda & Associates Engineers as the office manager and bookkeeper until retirement. She served in the chief’s advisory board for Police Chief Greg Allen for several years and later was appointed to the El Paso Police Department disciplinary board. She was also a member of the Police Pebble Hills Regional Command Center Advisory Board for several years. Her dedication to civic service reflected her strong sense of justice and responsibility. Irene found great joy and peace in nature, especially at her cabin in Cloudcroft, New Mexico. She loved spending time in the woods, surrounded by the beauty of the forest.
Irene will be remembered for the warmth she brought into the lives of those who knew her. She is survived by her beloved husband, Robert; her children, Michael and Yvonne Borunda-Bucher (Darryl); and her cherished grandchildren, Alyssa and Vidal.
She was preceded in death by her son, Robert Jr. Irene will be deeply missed and forever loved.
Visitation will be held Thursday, June 11, 2026 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm with a rosary at 7:00 at Funeraria Del Angel Central, 3839 Montana Ave. El Paso, Texas 79903. Funeral mass will be held Friday, June 12, 2026 at 10:00 am at St. Raphael Catholic Church, 2301 Zanzibar Rd. El Paso, Texas 79925 with the committal to follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, 401 S. Zaragoza Rd. El Paso, Texas 79907.
