

Irene Galindo, 74, of El Paso, Texas, passed away on Wednesday, December 20, 2023, at Providence East Hospital, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born Irene Leon in Chihuahua, Mexico, on January 16, 1949, to parents Juanita (Hernandez) Leon and Jose Alberto Leon. Irene was one of ten children and was the eldest daughter. Irene was raised in South Central El Paso where she met the love of her life, Rafael Galindo. Irene and Rafael raised a family of five daughters and one son: Carol, Cathy, twins Ruth and Sylvia, Elizabeth, and Rafael.
Rafael’s military career took the family from Texas to North Carolina and Kentucky. Irene was a proud Army wife and supported Rafael as he dutifully served his country for over 20 years while she raised their children. She devoted her love and her life to God, her husband, children, and family. Irene loved to laugh and dance. She cherished spending time with family. Her home was always open to all and served as the gathering place for anyone who wanted to sit around the dining room table to talk about everyday life, eat, drink coffee, and smoke cigarettes. You could always count on Irene to cheer you up when you were feeling down, give you advice about life, or give you tough love when she thought you needed it. She was a loving and caring person and helped anyone who was in need or just needed a hand. Once you met Irene, you were not just her friend, you were family, and she would be there to help whenever called upon. Irene loved her family fiercely and her faith in God was unwavering. Irene left an indelible mark on everyone who knew her. Irene’s passing will forever be felt by those who loved her. Her memory will live for eternity.
Irene is preceded in death by her father, mother, brothers Jose Jr., Javier, George, and daughter Carol. She is survived by her loving husband of 60 years, her children, sisters Ivonne, Isela, and Hilda, brothers Luis, Carlos, and Juan, several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
Services for Irene will be held on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church & Parish, located at 519 S. Latta St., El Paso, Texas 79905. Rosary will begin at 10:00 am with a Mass to follow. Per her wishes, Irene’s remains were cremated and interment service will be held at a date to be determined.
