Jim lived a full and remarkable life, shaped by service, resilience, and a deep sense of purpose and adventure. Raised as part of a U.S. foreign service family, he spent parts of his childhood overseas, developing a strong appreciation for different cultures and the wider world.
He served his country first in the United States Navy, and later in the U.S. Forest Service, before building a long and distinguished career in federal law enforcement, eventually retiring from the Drug Enforcement Administration. His work took him across many regions and roles over the years, always driven by duty and integrity.
He later continued his service internationally, helping train and support developing law enforcement efforts. In his later years, he found great meaning in teaching and mentorship, both here and abroad, forming lasting connections with those he helped.
James was a man who lived many lifetimes of experience, but in the end, it was family, learning, and giving back that mattered most to him. Music was a huge part of his life, and he enjoyed playing and collecting instruments from around the world. Those who knew him well will also remember his sardonic sense of humour.
James is survived by his wife of 46 years, Linda (née Young), his sister Bonnie L. Daly (née Greffenius), his son Aaron Greffenius (wife Kylie, née Beavis), and his grandchildren Max and Guy.
Following his cremation, the family will celebrate James’s life privately. Military Honors will be held at Fort Bliss National Cemetery on April 8, 2026, in recognition of his service to the Navy and his lifelong service to his country.
“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” (2 Timothy 4:7)
