Joe Jaramillo Silva, 99, passed away on July 23, 2017. He was born August 27, 1917 and began working at the age of 9 and continued working until age 83. At that time he retired in order to care for his beloved wife, Alice, who preceded him in joining with the Lord. Joe was the youngest of a family of five brothers and one sister, some of whom were born in the nineteenth century in New Mexico. He was the only one born in El Paso, Texas. He followed a rich and varied history of travel and adventure in business, including sometimes dangerous, risky work on the railroad before landing back in El Paso in the produce business. He helped revolutionize the produce business by bringing cellophane wrapping to El Paso and later by designing an entire new concept building for warehousing produce. Joe was a businessman extraordinaire and loved his profession, but was a renaissance man, being an accomplished chessman, singer, mathematician, puzzle master, witty story teller, and a snappy dancer. He was a devout Catholic, very involved in his community, and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Elks, and LULAC. He took leadership positions in all of these organizations. He was a beloved and happily involved father, grandfather and great grandfather. He left a challenging example for his children and others to follow. Preceding him in death are his beloved wife Alice Silva, his parents, Jesús and Rita Silva and his son in law Alfred J. Goytia as well as his generation of siblings, cousins and extended family. He leaves behind one daughter, Gloria Goytia, and two sons and their wives, Joe Silva Jr. and Mary Ann Silva and Roberto Silva and Aurelia Dávila de Silva as well as 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. His family will miss him greatly.
Visitation will be Friday, August 4th from 9:00A.M. to 10:00A.M. with vigil at 9:30A.M. at Martin Funeral Home Central. Funeral Mass will follow at 11:00A.M. at St. Stephen Catholic Church, burial at Evergreen Cemetery Alameda
