Luis Cobos Portillo, of Chaparral, New Mexico, passed away on Feb. 18, 2013 surrounded by his loved ones. He was a devout catholic. He will be remembered for his abundant warmth, easy laugh, and teasing ways. Luis was born July 1, 1929 in Alpine, Texas. He was a proud World War II Army veteran and a longtime member of the Pipefitter and Plumbers Union. His professional experiences included diverse projects ranging from homes of Hollywood stars, hospitals, a nuclear powerhouse, technical education, and even the (VLT) telescope in Chile. As an adult he continued pursuing the passions he developed as a boy in his beloved Big Bend area; cooking, hunting and working with his horses. In addition to his love of the outdoors, Luis was a lifelong student, especially in regard to local history and languages. As great as the satisfaction he found in his many interests, it was his family he prized most. He deeply loved, inspired and cared for them. The walls of his home are lined with photos and mementos that detail their milestones. Although the loss weighs heavy on many hearts, he will live on forever through his family‘s accomplishments. Luis is preceded by his father Jesus Portillo, mother Teresa Cobos Portillo, brother David Portillo and grandson Jacob Portillo. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years Glenna Hicks Portillo, sisters: Gloria Gallego, Julia Monclova, Berta Garcia, Elma Schodts, and Isabel Portillo, brothers: Jose Portillo, Chuy Portillo, and Armando Portillo, daughters Kathy Portillo Buchanan, Terrie Portillo Daniel, Karri Caraveau Loftin, and Kelli Caraveau Yearwood and sons Luis Cobos Portillo Jr., Victor James Portillo, Joseph Cobos Portillo and Jay F. Caraveau. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Visitation will be Sunday, Feb. 24 from 5 to 9 p.m. with a 6 p.m. rosary at Martin Funeral Home Central. Funeral mass will be held Monday, Feb. 25 at 9:30 a.m. at Saint Raphael Catholic Church, 2301 Zanzibar, followed by internment with full military honors at 11 a.m. at Fort Bliss National Cemetery.
