Maria de Jesus Borja

In the early morning hours of Friday, February 19, 2021, Maria de Jesus Borja finished her earthly journey surrounded by family. She has now opened her eyes to see the face of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was 88.

Born in Carichi, Chihuahua, Mexico, on January 16, 1933, Maria came to El Paso in the late 1950s and became a U.S. citizen in the fall of 1995. She worked hard to raise her four children and even cared for numerous nieces, nephews, and grandchildren over the years. Because she longed for those she loved to know and be transformed by Jesus, Maria's legacy of prayer will be felt forever.

She is preceded in death by her parents--Patricio Borja and Maria Paredes Borja, all nine of her siblings, her only son--Castulo Baca, and a grandson--Aaron Velasquez.

She is survived by three daughters: Patricia Borja-Velasquez (married to Henry), Cristina Slabic (married to Mike), and Margarita Basurto (married to Daniel); 11 grandchildren: Maria Carmen Martinez, Castulo Baca III (married to Maggie), Franco Baca (married to Monica), Priscilla Hernandez, Andres Fasolino, Sophia Slabic, Marco Aleman, Michael Slabic, Alexandra Slabic, Maximilliano Aleman, and Daisy Basurto; 9 great grandchildren: Katarina McKinley (married to Marquise), Miguel Hernandez, Alessandro Baca, Emmanuel Hernandez, Caz Baca, Neveah Fasolino, Sasha Baca, Alina Baca, and Matthias Baca; and 3 great, great grandchildren: Ava Vasquez, Zoey McKinley, and Zane McKinley as well as a large extended family.

Maria knew Jesus as Lord, and we have great peace and confidence that we who belong to Jesus will see her again.

"For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord." (Romans 8:38-39)

Visitation for the family will be from 11:30am-2:00pm with Prayer Service at 12:00pm Tuesday, March 2, at Funeraria Del Angel Central, 3839 Montana Avenue. Graveside service will follow at 2:30pm at Evergreen East Cemetery, 12400 Montana Avenue.
