Maria was born in Brownsville, Texas on February 24th, 1935. She was orphaned at a very young age and was cared for by a sweet unknown lady. Later on in life, she fell in love with Jose A. Ruiz and they got married. After some failed pregnancies, they were blessed with a baby boy, Juan G. Ruiz on March 5th, 1961. They moved their family from Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico to Pacoima, California.
In California, Maria dedicated herself to volunteering for Mary Immaculate Church. She helped raise funds for the various church construction projects by running the church’s Book Sales Booths. Maria and Jose spent years as a part of the religious formations groups and one of their favorites was the choir. She enjoyed signing many vibrant hymns.
Years later she moved to El Paso, Texas to join her son and his family. Upon establishing themselves in El Paso, Maria and Jose continued their work at Saint Mark Catholic Church. As they had done in California, they quickly became a part of the religious formations team and began helping build their church community and programs. During these years, Jose’s health declined and Maria and her son focused on taking care of him. Jose passed in 2013 from advanced Alzheimer’s.
Since then, she lived a quiet and peaceful life at home, enjoying the company of her family, particularly her great grandchildren. She passed away peacefully in her sleep as she was being taken care of by her son, grandson Juan and granddaughter Elizabeth.
